Meet Frederick Fulmer of Joshua Tree Art Gallery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederick Fulmer.

Frederick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Joshua Tree Art Gallery was founded in 2009. The idea behind the gallery was to give local artists a place to show their work. The area had so many artists in the area & there was a need for a place to show their art.

I invite some of the local artists to come put together a show at the vacant space next door to the Joshua Tree, Health Food Store in downtown JT.

The gallery has since moved into a larger space in the same shopping center at 61607 29 Palms Hwy, back in 2010. The gallery list of artists has grown over the years to include artists from around the world. I enjoy meeting new artists, sharing ideas & helping to create a community that support the arts.

The gallery has openings of new works every second Saturday of the month.

In 2006, I started an Artists Residency program to encourage new artists to come explore the Mojave Desert & create art. This will be our 12th year inviting artists to submit proposal to come stay in our dedicated studio & living accommodations for up to 7 weeks. The artists are given a show at the Joshua Tree Art gallery at the end of their stay.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The gallery has grown over the years & has a reputation for showcasing some of the best artists in the area. Our openings are always well attended. As with most galleries it’s a challenge to make sales to help support the artist.

The gallery has an online website & a presence on Artsy.net, which helps create new clients for the gallery.

Please tell us about Joshua Tree Art Gallery.
The gallery features Contemporary Art, Painting, Sculpture, and Photography.

I am very proud to have create a gallery which has stayed in business for so many years & to have foster the careers of some of today up & coming new artists with the gallery & the residency program.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I can say I would have done this any differently. I have enjoyed the collaboration with other artists & the adventure still continues. We have change out format for the 2018 year to include some stellar one person shows & this will be interesting to see what happens. Our group shows we have paired down to two for coming year, so It’s a new look for the gallery.
