Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua “Sicology”.
Joshua, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out making short films and taking photos in the Bay Area in middle school throughout high school with my friends. Even though we were making them for fun, I knew that in my soul this is what I wanted to explore and master as a career. I dived into it more when I was in my high school’s media academy where we focused on animation, filmmaking, and photography. Senior year I started to travel to San Francisco and link with other photographers and we would shoot around the city. I was very into cityscape and landscape photography back in 2016. That was my start. The winter of 2016, I got tired of shooting that and shifted into portraiture and lifestyle photography and started shooting on film formats. I was going by the name Cam Creates back then but ended up hating it after a while. I needed a change. I realized that the art I am working on is really a form of psychology in its own way. Through the lens, I get to see a different, more open side of people. So SICOLOGY grew out of that.
Summer of 2017, I moved to Los Angeles to really pursue what I wanted to do. I didn’t know anyone down there and had no idea where I was going to start. I just knew I needed to take the risk and the blessings would come. While surviving in LA, I met a lot of like-minded people who I started using my photography and video skills with. I worked on BTS for music videos, started modeling, working as a creative for brand parties, and doing small music videos, and was a videographer for a couple of artists like Jazz Cartier. I ended up shooting a lookbook in Japan and Paris for my friend Mateo’s brand RESERVED, and just kept at it.
Now I just recently relocated to New York to grow myself as an artist even further. LA is where I developed more of my artistic talents, and NY is teaching me how to turn it into a business so I can live the lifestyle I want for myself. Now I’m shifting into making music to express myself even more, while also working on short films and music videos.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Success is never a smooth road. There will always be road bumps and trials you have to overcome physically, spiritually and mentally. My parents lost our childhood home in the Bay in 2017 so the Universe basically forced me onto the path I’m on now. My first place in LA had three people in one bedroom and two people in the living room. It was hell. We ended up losing that place to and I ended up homeless for about 3-4 months. Bounced around a lot of different places and even had to spend some nights in the storage unit I had to keep my stuff safe and most nights my car. I’m still not close to where I want to be but thats what keeps me on my hustle and grind.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My business is really just me, SICOLOGY. I’m a multi-faceted artist who uses any medium I can to express myself and create my own world. I’m a photographer, model, and just started to dive into making my own music. I Direct and edit short films and music videos, along with photography. I recently released my first photobook in May that I am extremely proud of. I’m glad that I have the freedom to work on myself everyday. I’m not locked into a 9-5 job and not stuck in a classroom. That life just isn’t for me, so I don’t waste any time on creating the life I really want.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very imaginative. I stayed to myself most of the time and if I was around people, they were my friends that I would make films with, take photos and make music. I was always working on making something out of nothing. That’s what I always took pride in.
