Meet Joshua Mills of It’s Alive! Media in The SFV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Mills.

Joshua, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2002, I started my boutique PR company because I was tired of getting laid off from corporate and record label gigs and I knew I’d never fire myself. It was time to look out for myself. Seventeen years later, we’re still going strong.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth run. Sometimes things hum right along and sometimes you struggle. But you just keep on keeping’ on. Publicity has changed so much since I started in 1995. Back then, you would call journalists to follow up on records. Then you faxed. Then you emailed. Back then you actually got to know writers. You know if they liked baseball or if they liked the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Things like that. Now, you just know what they retweet. It’s a strange world in 2019. I remember we used to make fun of the fact when in 1997, someone would say, “We have it online, but not in print!” and our bosses would frown. Now it’s flopped. It’s in print and not retweeted. Did it even happen? You have to change with the times. I sound like my father.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about It’s Alive! Media – what should we know?
It’s Alive! Media is a boutique PR & Management firm that specializes in music. We’ve worked books, DVDs, tours and other products but it’s always related to music.

We’ve worked many genres – punk, world, rock, industrial, Americana, indie, blues, electronic, alternative, reissues, alt-country. Classical and Jazz are not our forte.

I’m really proud of the fact that we’ve been around since 2002 and I still enjoy what I’m doing and I am always surprised by new music. I still love music and buy music. I’m just as passionate as ever.

What sets us apart is that we are available. Many larger PR firms are not like this. They are working larger campaigns and as a client, you are the third or fourth or fifth project being pitched. At It’s Alive! we do things in a smaller more personalized way.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Relationships. Relationships with the media including journalists, editors, managers, lawyers, record labels, social media and marketing specialists and much more. You can only get that with someone who has worked in the music business for years. 2+ decades, baby.
