Meet Josh Fields of Hatch 86 Films

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Fields.

Hi Josh, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I fell in love with shooting videos in high school when I would make skate videos with my friends. I knew back then that I wanted to make a career out of using a camera. After high school, I went to film school at Cal State Northridge where I got a bachelor’s degree in Television Production. From there I PA’d on several productions in LA while also starting my own production company Hatch 86 Films. Over the years I grew my client list and was able to do Hatch 86 Films full-time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth in the production industry. Most people, in the beginning, struggled with getting their foot in the door or just being able to afford the equipment they need; I was no different. When I first started shooting on my own I couldn’t even afford a camera so I was either borrowing cameras or bringing someone on that had one.

Fast forward to today, I have most of all the equipment I typically need, but a common struggle is getting proper budgets. Nice equipment is great, but when you don’t have an adequate crew to use it, it doesn’t matter. In the music video industry budgets aren’t always the best making it difficult to crew up to meet the needs of the production.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My company Hatch 86 Films specializes in music videos and commercials. We always take a cinematic approach to all of our projects while still keeping things a little fresh. I think attention to detail sets us apart, from preproduction, on set, to editing. I can’t count how many times putting in a little extra work has made a big difference in production.

Most recently we became a featured artist with Tokina Cinema lenses which is something we are very proud of. We love working on all types of projects, with all types of people; that’s what’s great about this job, every day is always different.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Loving what I do is important to my success. There are always those long shoots or late-night edits and it’s my passion for what I do that helps me push through and create to the best of my ability as opposed to just getting it done to be done.
