Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Ellis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing design by learning from online tutorials in junior high, and after winning a design contest at the age of 13, I figured I was on to something. From there, I did all the relevant classes that I could in high school, which led to my first office job working on the school’s website after I graduated.
Because I was good at math and science, I ended up going to college for civil engineering because I thought I would be able to mix the design that I loved with math and science, but it turns out I hated it. I found a full-time job doing design while I was still in college, and that’s where I learned the majority of the foundational concepts that I use every day.
A few years later, I moved to Orange County and started Lioncastle Creative, where we design websites and print marketing materials for local businesses.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say the road has been smooth for the most part, but I’ve made a few turns that made the trip take longer than necessary. If I could go back, I’d prefer to have continued to pursue design opportunities while doing self-teaching via online courses and getting mentored by colleagues and friends.
As for the past few years of being in business with Lioncastle, I’m realizing I’ve made similar mistakes by trying to go at things the conventional way. Going at it the conventional way is a great way to get conventional results, but I don’t want conventional results!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lioncastle Creative – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At our core, Lioncastle is a solution-design company, meaning we’re in the business of solving business problems for our clients.
Design (both web and print) is the main specialized tool that we use to address the types of problems that we see, but we’re not afraid to try new things to solve problems for our clients. Currently, we’re most proud of our work with Simply Layered, which is a bakery in Huntington Beach that sells packaged goods in Mother’s Market.
Over the past few years, we’ve been working with them to update their branding and packaging to better attract their target buyers and stand out on the shelves, and we’re proud to say that most of the products that we’ve redesigned for them have seen their average sales double.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I’m constantly inspired by the variety of people who are pursuing their dreams, whether they’re business owners, creatives, or both. As for what I like least, I feel like it’s cliche to say, but it has to be the traffic!
