Meet Joseph Wright of Joseph B Wright Photography in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Wright.

Joseph, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a husband and Dad. My second boy is due next week!

My mom moved me and my older sister to Santa Clarita from The Valley when I was in the 4th grade.

I come from a family of artists. My grandfather played violin in Lawrence Welk’s orchestra and also worked with Spade Cooley. My Grandmother was a professional piano teacher and my aunt, a professional singer. My father is in the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame for his music composition and is also a professional jazz drummer. My mother’s side were a more left brained bunch, although my grandfather had a lifelong passion for photography.

I’ve spent a large part of my professional life in the corporate world doing project management and training and have some experience working with production companies around Los Angeles. I’ve moved into photography to spend more time with my two young boys and move away from the corporate grind.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Replacing a steady income in the IT world with a sporadic one in the arts has been hard. As a family, we have definitely had to make some sacrifices along the way. I’ve had to be very creative in finding ways to pay the bills. While I’d like to say I’ve made it over the financial hurtle, it’s still a struggle.

Please tell us about Joseph B Wright Photography.
So in starting a photography business, I knew I would be competing with a lot of people who did photography part time. I wanted to build a brand that incorporated some modern trends but also held onto some of what makes photography timeless. I want your kids to find your photo in 40 years and put it on display.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Looking back, I can’t say I regret anything I’ve done. I waited a long time before deciding to turn my photography into a business because I wanted to make sure I was ready. I did break a $1200 lens last summer at the zoo, I’d like to have that day back!
