Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Enayati.
Joseph, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a 5th-generation physician, I have always been interested in the distinction between “sick care” and “health care.” My practice philosophy is based upon staying at the forefront of regenerative medicine. Harnessing the body’s own ability to heal itself is incredibly exciting, and we are in an era when medicine is just beginning to realize the full potential of treatments like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Amniotic Fluid Allograft, and bone marrow-derived Stem Cells. As an Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon with advanced training in Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine, I have a unique skill set that allows me to diagnose and treat the root cause of a condition and help the body heal itself, rather than just cover up the symptoms.
After completing my fellowship, I joined a busy practice in Palm Springs. However, I soon felt ready to start my own practice, so I returned home to Beverly Hills and set up shop. It feels great to be back home after moving around so much – my years of medical training took me all over the country: Midwestern University in Phoenix, UCSF, University of Chicago, and Mount Sinai in New York City.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Setting up my own practice was challenging. They don’t teach you business in medical school, so it was a steep learning curve! I went into my practice feeling very confident in my medical skills; but over the past few years I have learned so much about contracts, construction, human resources, taxes, and so many other aspects of running a small business.
Please tell us about Beverly Hills Advanced Pain and Spine.
My practice is called Beverly Hills Advanced Pain and Spine. Unlike many pain management practices, we do not focus on treating our patients with medications. I specialize in interventional treatments, including regenerative orthobiologic therapies such as Stem Cell, PRP, and Amniotic Fluid Allograft injections. I also offer safe and carefully supervised ketamine infusions to treat chronic pain that has not responded well to other treatments as well as for treatment-resistant depression.
I love using bone marrow-derived Stem Cells to treat joint and spine pain. I extract bone marrow from a patient’s iliac crest using a nearly painless process to access the marrow with virtually no trauma to the surrounding bone. Then we spin the bone marrow in a centrifuge for about 15 minutes, until it separates into different layers, including a distinct layer rich with mesenchymal stem cells, which I inject directly into the injured area. Then I let the patient’s body get to work. I can’t think of any medication that is more powerful than a patient’s own stem cells when it comes to restoring and rejuvenating a damaged or arthritic joint. My goal is to let the body heal itself – I just give it a little nudge to get things started.
One treatment that I am especially excited about right now is stem cell injections into the discs of the lower spine, as a non-invasive alternative to spine surgery. There have been several recent studies showing that this is a remarkably promising treatment, and it lines up perfectly with my training and skill set.
I screen my patients carefully before performing any type of procedure. It is very common to have a patient come in requesting a specific treatment only to have me recommend something completely different because I know that what they ask for is not going to give them the results they want.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Hindsight is always 20/20, but I always try to focus on moving forward in the best way possible rather than changing the past.
