Meet Jordan Shifrin of Jordan Shields Design in Hermosa Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Shifrin.

Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to LA in 2012, after studying Interior Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, to pursue interior design. I started out in LA working part time for a commercial focused firm and also a high end residential firm. I was able to work and learn so much from those firms and also pick up small residential jobs on the side. In 2014, I received an exciting residential project for a NBA player and was able to make the leap and focus my attention on that project as well as other smaller projects I had at the time. From there I kept taking on a variety of projects and got introduced to more commercial projects. I worked as an in-house design consultant for a large development company based in LA and was able to learn a ton about commercial renovations and development. I really got to understand the business side and the real estate development process from that experience. Following the in-house consulting work I began more hospitality focused projects which I am very excited about, and is where I am at now, I recently finished up some designs for boutique short term rentals that I am looking forward to sharing very soon! I continue to work with residential clients, architects, and development companies on a variety of projects and love the variety.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, sleep was definitely a luxury, but luckily, I am obsessed with design. Even on my free time I find myself on my phone or computer spending hours checking out design, fashion, and cool new restaurants and hotels around the world for inspiration. I think the trickiest part for me and my new business though was that I had moved to a new city with not many contacts in a city and industry that often thrives off of referrals but I kept patient (and keep patient), stay positive, and produce the best work I can each time, and it works!

Please tell us about Jordan Shields Design.
We specialize in spaces that bring in a sense of whimsy and really focus on that initial feeling that is experienced when first entering the space. Whether it be fun and playful or more moody and relaxing. Interior design is such an exciting opportunity to create any mood and function, and that is an opportunity that is so important to us. We ‘re always thinking about the balance of keeping things relevant while maintaining a sense of sophisticated timelessness, while having fun. What we are most proud of is designing spaces that work with the client and given space successfully. That is what really sets us apart, we take those 2 things very seriously because if a space does not make sense with needs of the client and space it isn’t a truly well designed space.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was always outside and grew up in Alaska for the summers so it was such an amazing place to be able to explore and learn from. My grandparents also have a farm in Texas so my favorite memories growing up involve just wandering around and exploring.
