Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Ching.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jordan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first fell in love with the camera while studying abroad in China. There were so many new sights and scenes, I wanted a way to remember everything. I never dreamt that it would become my life. After college, I was searching for a direction. I tried corporate and it didn’t suite me. My good friend, Lorenzo, told me I took nice photos and invited me to a check out a start up media company. It was the first time I was introduced to the creative world. I come from a family of business people, so the arts were a foreign thing for me. I went on a few shoots and was hooked. Being on set felt amazing. As fate would have it, I got laid off from my tech job. I ended up working at a friend’s pizza restaurant and decided I was going to become a photographer full-time. Up until that point, I had followed the plan. Good grades, college, respectable job, but it wasn’t enough. I wasn’t fulfilled. So I took a leap and followed my heart. The plan was photography, but I ended up directing my first music video (again because of Lorenzo) and fell in love with that even more. That was 7 or 8 years ago? I’ve lost track. Since that first music video, I’ve grown into an artist, writer, director, and CEO. I’ve been able to travel the world and work with some of the most incredible people. My dreams have grown as well, which is what brought me down to LA from the Bay. The funny thing is, 7 or 8 years sounds hella long, but really that was all just warm up for what’s to come.
Has it been a smooth road?
Just recently, Lorenzo and I parted with our long time business partner and it was ugly. Separating from any kind of relationship gets messy. We had to dissolve our first company which broke our hearts. It was surreal having to end something that you’ve poured your heart and soul into. It makes you question everything. Aside from this, I think anytime you choose your own path there will be struggles… Personal, financial, creative, mental, and emotional challenges are all apart of the journey.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Flipbird Films story. Tell us more about the business.
Flipbird Films is a boutique production agency dedicated to the craft of storytelling. Our vision is to create bold, cinematic, and dynamic content that inspires and moves the masses. We are driven to transform the narrative while shedding light on the people and stories that are not represented in mainstream media. I think what I’m most proud of as a company is the fact that we are creating our own lane and doing things our way. Coming from the Bay, we do things a little different so I’m excited to fuse this mentality with LA culture and opportunities. Even though we are a brand new company, we have over a decade of experience with creating content so we have a chance to apply some of the lessons we learned from the previous business and not make the same mistakes.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The film/media industry is shifting like crazy! With streaming democratizing distribution, content creators are in an amazing position. Not to mention the diversification of tastes and consumer habits. People want to watch things that they can learn from and/or relate to. In the next 5-10 years, I think the industry will have no choice but to support women and minorities. The demand for different perspectives, narratives, and stories will be too great to ignore.
