Meet Jonnae Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonnae Thompson.

Jonnae, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey as a stand-up comedian in 2008. I entered a comedy competition on a whim while attending California State University Northridge. I placed as the runner up and from there moved on to performing regularly at the World Famous Comedy Store. While completing my undergraduate degree, I began producing comedy shows on my campus. I wanted to build a comedy culture on my campus to help students get away from the pressure of studies. I was able to do so with producing and hosting the “Tickle Me Tuesdays” and “Laugh Your Class Off.” These series introduced our students to legendary talent such as; Trevor Noah, Tiffany Haddish, Neal Brennan, Luenell, Sam Jay and the list goes on.

I have had the opportunity to perform stand up throughout the city, nationally and internationally. Throughout my journey I have performed everywhere from alleys, to Islands. Churches to strip clubs. That is the beauty of this career. I have also had the opportunity to be featured on Tru Tv’s “Laff Tracks,” “Funny AF” on Revolt TV, and “Who Got Next” produced by the legendary Bob Sumner (Def Comedy Jam). I have also had the opportunity to act in various digital series and short films written and produced by up and coming talent based here in Los Angeles. In addition to lending voiceover to the award-winning animation, “Super Idiots,” where I composed my first music for a score .

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been the smoothest road but it has been perfectly paved for my journey. In my industry, many don’t quite see the full fruits of their labor until about 12-15 years in the game. Of course, that is not the case for many. However, many of the comedy superstars that we see have been paying dues for at least a decade before they reach stardome.

When I first began comedy, one of the biggest struggles was not having a car. This was before ride-sharing apps came along. I had a habit of saying yes to gigs without knowing how I was going to get there. I learned to navigate public transportation like a pro. Many times it was entertaining, but there were definitely some moments I feared for my life. If you can imagine riding the bus in Los Angeles alone after midnight for possibly 10 minutes of stage time. That’s when you know you love what you do.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a stand-up comedian who specializes in comedy and hosting. I am most proud of my longevity and growth throughout the years. I am set apart from others in the sense that I am a triple threat, I am a comedian, actress, and singer. Lookout for feature projects “Children Of The Sun” (Horror Film) and “Car Therapy” (Digital Comedy Series) releasing soon.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Vargus Mason was the first person to discover me as a comedian and connect me to the Comedy Store. Nichelle Murdock has been producing a series at the comedy store for 17 years called “CracK ‘Em Up Thursdays” where alumni hosts include: SNL’s (Leslie Jones, Tony Baker, Justin Hires, Chris Spencer) brought me on as a host of this legendary series. California State University Northridge for giving me the opportunity to produce comedy series on the campus. Bob Sumner for casting me in my first television spots. And last but not least, my family for being my foundation of funny.
