Meet Jonathan Rowan of Supastar Productionz in Playa Del Ray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Rowan.

Jonathan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
One of the first things that attracted me to the art of filmmaking was my love for the arts. Ever since I was a child, I had always longed to become part of the entertainment industry. Growing up in a single-parent household in Louisville, Kentucky, my mother instilled moral character, principles, values, and the importance of having vision & achieving your goals. By age four, I quickly gained a passion for the arts through my talents of singing, dancing, acting, and playing the piano. And by the age of 24, I had explored all of these fields being featured in stage productions, dance performances, piano recitals, and also singing competitions across the United States. But it wasn’t until my love for the arts, inspired me to use my gift of writing to create visions of stories untold.

During my middle and high school years, I began writing short stories and soon developed a passion for the art of storytelling. I would often write scenario-based stories, using the names of my friends and craft visions of fantasy, horror, and moral value. It would not be until college that I would find a way to infuse all my talents together and make my visions become reality.

In the fall of 2006, I began my undergraduate journey at Northern Kentucky University, where I also worked for the media services department on campus. During my time there, I gained experience with audio/visual skills behind the camera, editing, lighting, studio production, live event recordings, music video production, and film production. And in 2009, Whitley Dubose and I developed a digital media platform called, Fresh Air Show. Fresh Air Show specialized in music video production, public service announcements, developing a web-based talk show, and also spotlighting local & national talent that graced the campus of NKU. But this was still just the beginning of what I had discovered, I could accomplish.

During my final year at NKU, I successfully wrote, produced, directed and edited my first feature film, Slasher. “Slasher” tells the story of a fictitious media production company, whose employees are being stalked and killed by an unforeseen individual. And in the spring of 2012, I had successfully graduated from NKU with a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-law and Political Science with a minor in Dance. Over the next few years, Slasher would see its public debut and begin its film festival run. With the success of a feature under my belt, I finally embraced my calling as a filmmaker, putting my goals of attending law school on hold, and instead setting my sights on Film School in Los Angeles, California.

In the fall of 2016, I began the next chapter of my life in Los Angeles, California at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film & Television. During that same time, I created my independent media production company, Supastar Productionz, specializing in film works and special projects. In May of 2020, I completed my film school journey graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production from LMU. My feature, Slasher, as well as my LMU short films, Chocolate Milk, Invisible, Runnin’, Heart Beats and Beauty Mark have been featured at Revolt TV, DTLA Film Festival, Louisville’s International Festival of Film, Charlotte Black Film Festival, LGBTQ Shorts Film Festival, One Love Manassas Film Festival, Reveel Network and Canon Burbank Professional Technology Center just to name a few. Now freshly graduated, I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my life and ready to take the film industry by storm.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With anything worth having, there come challenges. Being from a smaller town than Los Angeles, dreaming as big as I do, didn’t come without discouragement. Some thought my dreams weren’t obtainable. No one could have imagined that this country boy from Louisville, Kentucky would make it as far as I have. I set my sights on proving them and anyone who ever doubted me wrong along my journey by persevering in the spite of doubt and financial hardships. I’m a hard-worker who creatively thinks outside the box and sets goals himself.

Moving to Los Angeles was the biggest leap of faith I have ever taken in my life. I came out here initially without a place to stay, chasing the dream of attending film school. I prayed to the Lord that if this was meant for me, to make a way for me to stay in Los Angeles. As a result, God heard my prayer and answered it by providing off-campus housing as my new residence. Now here we are again post-graduation and in the middle of a global pandemic, where I’m currently jobless with my apartment lease up in less than two months. I’m keeping my faith strong and allowing God to guide me on this journey in spite of not know when things will normalize in the current job market nor entertainment industry.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Director, Writer, Producer, Actor and Editor are just a few of the titles that best describe myself. I am the true definition of talent, drive, passion, creativity and vision. Considered a man of many talents behind and in front of the camera, there is no limit to the skills that I possess from directing, writing and producing scripts and film concepts to editing and casting. Combined with intellect, charisma, perseverance, creativity and a work ethic rivaled by few, Jonathan Rowan is destined to be one of Hollywood’s next Leading Filmmakers.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe the role of luck is the grace of God, allowing you to grow and prosper. I’ve been fortunate to grow within the four years I’ve been in Los Angeles, California and believe one can never stop learning and achieving. Set goals for yourself and focus on accomplishing them.
