Meet Jonathan Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Allen.

Jonathan Allen

Hi Jonathan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story is one of ups and downs. I grew up in a small conservative town in southern middle Tennessee. I was bullied a lot in school. I came out as gay at a young age, and that just made everything worse. Don’t get me wrong… I felt more free and like I could be myself, but the backlash I received from it was unbearable. My parents sent me to Christian camps and conversion therapy sessions with a Christian Councelor. I left home at 18 years old… Put myself through a year of college and then decided to drop out and Audition for America’s Got Talent, where I would eventually go on to the semi-final live rounds in NYC. During this time, I was in an abusive relationship… it was psychically and emotionally abusive. This really messed with my mental state, and I haven’t been the same since. Later on, I was diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and anxiety. Shortly after, I was able to leave the relationship of about 8 years. That’s when I turned to drugs. It was how I coped to not have to think about or feel any of the traumatic experiences I’ve been through. I’ve been in and out of inpatient and outpatient programs and still struggle to this day with substance abuse. A sober life is what I want more than anything… so I’m currently working with a therapist to unpack these traumas that I have where I can move forward in life.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
