Meet Dr. Jon Foran of The Jim and Eleanor Randall Breast Center in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jon Foran.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Foran. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In the early 90’s, I began my radiology career in LA. Breast imaging was evolving rapidly with the birth of high resolution ultrasound, digital mammograms, breast MRI and image guided breast biopsy. Mastering these technologies could really save lives! I studied the art of cancer detection and went to courses until I was competent at screening for breast cancer. In nearby Pasadena, a former resident colleague offered me a job which included working at an amazing breast center, now the Jim and Eleanor Randall Breast Center.

At the Pasadena location, radiologists were specialized in breast disease and highly regarded and trusted by their colleagues. These doctors were transforming the role of radiologist from mammogram readers (one of my patients called them “map readers”) to specialists capable of making a credible diagnosis. This sub specialization led to the breast center becoming a regional resource center with referrals from all over the LA area, serving 50,000 women a year.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In my first job in 1990’s, breast diagnosis was performed by the surgeon, with little or no imaging involved. Breast ultrasound was not yet accepted. That was the culture of the day. Gaining acceptance of radiological non-invasive techniques was a slow process that took at least a decade.
