Today we’d like to introduce you to John Solomon.
John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started on the wholesale side of the business working for Southern Wine & Spirits as a sales person/sales manager for 10 years. The entrepreneurial bug motivated me to look for a retail location to purchase. I decided to buy Liquorama in 1998 based on it fitting into what I needed to build out my business plan. We grew our business with double digit growth 120 months in a row. This growth was the result of remodeling, installing a wine tasting bar, advertising on cable, radio and out of home. We also created a huge online presence with our website in 2001. We found a niche online and continue to grow that segment. We compete based on service and selection as opposed to low prices. We are also committed to supporting many local nonprofits with donations of wine & spirits. Liquorama is also the host of an annual Pomona Hospital Wine tasting supporting Neonatal department. We have raised over $750K in the past 13years. We are now celebrating our 20th anniversary and look forward to another 20 years.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Certainly not a smooth ride. Managing cash flow and inventory in the early years was the biggest issue. The recession and competition became challenges as well later. We are fortunate to have an amazing group of buyers and managers that have been with us for over 15 years.
Liquorama Fine Wine & Spirits – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our commitment to customer service is exceptional. We still believe the customer is always right and strive to treat each one as family. We go to great lengths to help customers locate hard to find bottles and fulfill each and every special order. I am most proud of our relationship with our employees, we are one big family at Liquorama.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Hitting financial benchmarks are always nice, but the success of our fundraiser for 13yrs benefiting the Pomona Hospital Neonatal is truly the most satisfying.
