Meet John Moran of Epic Freight Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Moran.

John, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from the University of Arizona and moved to Hermosa Beach, California to play pro beach volleyball in 1998. I made the AVP tour in 2001 and needed to find a career flexible enough to keep playing. I was lucky enough to get hired by a large transportation company that said as long as I hit my numbers, I could play as much as I wanted––and that’s how my now 17-year journey in the freight industry started. In 2006 I joined a startup which we were fortunate enough to build and sell in 2008. When my two years non compete agreement was up, I took that money and started my own business, Epic Freight Solutions with some of my closest friends.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is that a trick question? I don’t think anytime you start a business it’s smooth, ha! There are always challenges.

Whether it’s managing cash flow, clients, or personal, there are always bumps in the road. But honestly, that’s where all the growth happens. I know, I know, that’s what everyone says, but we’ve learned so much through all of the tough times and I can honestly say they’ve made us a better organization.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Epic is a domestic and international transportation provider that focuses on heavyweight, time-sensitive, high-value shipments. We’re known for world-class customer service, tremendous flexibility and a high degree of integrity––not something you come across every day in our industry, unfortunately. Bottom line, we’re known for our people. That being said I have to say I’m most proud of the fact Epic has been voted in the top 25 of LA’s Best Places to Work for 5 years in a row–hopefully, soon-to-be 6!

What were you like growing up?
I was a very outgoing kid and a huge sports fanatic (still am). I played every game there was and I was very energetic. My dad was big on education so I was also an extremely studious kid. I was also pretty high strung (go figure) and put a lot of pressure on myself, but thankfully those traits have paid off in the long run. I was an intense kid and I’m an intense adult, what can I say!
