Today we’d like to introduce you to John Lowell Anderson.
John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been attending shows in LA for about eight years now. My first visit to the Troubador, I believe for Ben Howard’s Every Kingdom tour, is what comes to mind when I think about the beginning of my journey. I remember being at that show, feeling the radiation of what the people on stage were creating, and knowing that this is what I want to do. I had been writing some stuff here and there before that experience, but there’s something about seeing a good show that keeps you up all night, that spurs me to write my own songs.
Since then, I’ve self-released a couple of records, composed scores for an array of short films and commercials, and played sets at The Hotel Cafe, The Mint, and a handful of other LA spots. Howard was so transparent about his human experience that night, without saying anything too specific. You just felt it. I think that’s what I strive to do in my music. If I can help individuals feel a little more connected & less alone, that’s the dream.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
That’s funny. I don’t know any artists who avoid struggle effectively! I think most artists can resonate with being their own worst critic so that I won’t talk too much about that. The big one there is the constant question “Is this song actually any good?”
I spend so much time writing, recording, re-recording, and mixing with songs that it’s pretty common to get tired of them unless they stand the test of time far beyond the initial high of creation. Another current & constant struggle is funding, but there are always silver linings that keep me encouraged.
I’ve just started a Patreon page where fans can support me with small monthly donations in exchange for benefits along the way. And I’ve been overwhelmed with gratitude for the help I’ve gotten in that form.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m an independent singer-songwriter and composer. I write contemplative & mood driven songs. My music can be reminiscent of artists like Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Ben Howard, and Noah Gundersen.
I try to write honest, moody tunes. Some of my composer spots have been with companies like Pixar and Adidas which feels cool to say.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started writing earlier. I didn’t truly realize how important the process would be for me emotionally, mentally, relationally until I was about 19-20.
You might say that’s still pretty young, which I won’t argue too much. It’s just funny to look back and watch myself doing anything else other than music.
