Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Mendoza Segundo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m the second youngest of eight brothers and one sister total of nine of us, my parents were both blind, they met at their early twenties and had a total of eleven kids, two of them died at an early age, they raised us up like normal kids and normal parents. My mom did all the house shores, beautiful and wonderful job as a mom, she would cook, clean, iron, hand washed played with us, etc. My father as the man of the family, would go out and work six days a week. Something that I admire about my father is that even tho he didn’t have his sight and he didn’t go to school, he was a strong man in character and very smart, even a small room or two but it was his, he never had us renting from place to place, Now his house is of three levels, first floor where he lives, second and third have apartments, we always had food, cloth and a roof over our heads, We are all from Mexico City and most of us are been here in the states for over 25 years.
I remember since I was about 13 years old, my Dad just to wake me up everyday at seven in the morning to do some house shores, to be honest I didn’t like it but he continues to do this till I was in his house. He always taught us not to be lazy, to work hard and be honest. Fast forward by the grace of God, we all are here and have our own construction businesses. My brothers Rigo and Nick always supported me to go to school. They said as long as you get good grades, we will support you but if not, don’t waste time and find a job. My brothers the electricians started taking me to work with them on weekends and vacation time, I tried to like electrical work but it didn’t worked, then my brother the painter started taking me as well, there I liked all the detailed work, every time I will be working with him I will watch and learn, so when he left to get food, materials or see other jobs, I will practice what I saw him doing, and I did it woohooo!!! I kept doing the same!
Little by little I would get calls from friends, and their friends asking me for my painting services, sometime more often then not, I would find picky customers, for me I was giving my 100% but it wasn’t their 100% so they would had me come back for very little minor details and to be honest I would say in my mind what’s wrong with these people?? But I always went back and did what they asked for so they can be happy customers with the painting job I did for them. Fast forward, I keep getting better and better thanks to all my picky customers, not I don’t get frustrated its a challenge for me and I like it, I really put my heart into it.
Back about ten years ago I had a married couple as clients in Venice Beach, they recently bought a home and hired me to paint the whole interior, They were so happy with everything I was doing for them that every time someone will call to their home phone they will boast about their house and the painting job saying, come and look we have this extraordinary painter our house looks amazing!!!
This is why the slogan of my company is from Ordinary to Extraordinary… Now I am The painting and licensed contractor.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some of my struggles have been customers that don’t want to pay a fair price for a professional painting job. Also do to other people that they called themselves “painters” but a lot of times or most of the time they charge to low plus they don’t use quality materials plus they don’t do quality work as well.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Extra Care Custom Painting – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am the painting and licensed contractor.
We do drywall and stucco patching, pressure washing, refinish cabinets paint or stained, whole interior of a home or business. What sets me apart from others is that I do quality work it could be Beverly Hills or E. Los Angeles. We specialize in interior & exterior custom homes. I’m proud of my honesty, I don’t cut corners I make sure it looks professional even if I didn’t make what I thought I was going to make money-wise.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like all diversity, cultures, food events, beaches, mountains, weather, etc.
I don’t like that it’s getting to crowed it.
