Meet Joanne Martinez of The Powder Room By Joanne in Whittier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Martinez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always enjoyed anything beauty and was always the go to person for everyone’s hair and makeup growing up. I attended beauty school in 2006 and started freelancing makeup. After doing makeup for a couple of years, I went back to school for esthetics. I worked for a few smaller spas in the Whittier area. In between building my clientele, I also worked part-time at Sephora.

I knew my passion was no longer makeup so I found a full-time skincare position at massage envy and within a year, I was promoted to lead esthetician. I was highly requested and booked out for two months. I loved my job but I felt limited at the treatments I was able to do. So I decided to go solo and it was the best decision I ever made. I will be going on three years this week. I started at Phenix salon suites and as of Feb. 2020 I signed a lease for a bigger studio in uptown Whittier.

Has it been a smooth road?
Yes, in the beginning. Building clientele was a struggle. Social media was just starting out and they never teach you really how to market yourself.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Powder Room By Joanne – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a solo esthetician and I love working on clients with pigmentation and acne. I am proud that I have built my business organically. I am a big believer in self-love and spirituality, I use crystals and reiki during some of my facial treatments. I believe in healing the mind-body and soul while promoting a good skincare regimen.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love everything about Whittier. It’s where I grew up. It feels good being able to grow my own business in the area I roamed around when I was a kid. A lot of the smaller business are still open to this day and it gives me pride knowing that this can and will be me.
