Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Heart and Benjamin Milliken.
Joanna and Benjamin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We started this idea of building a community coffee shop a few years back and a few drinks deep on NYE with our best friends. They sparked us talking coffee, business, people, & community. At the time I had a background in design, recruiting a passion for people. Ben & I both also had an expensive romance with coffee going on as we had just had a baby… “No sleep, your passion for a good cup of coffee deepens. It’s a thing. You parents out there get me, and I get you” says Joanna.
Has it been a smooth road?
We had tons of problems from a contractor who just could not keep up, (the build out that was supposed to take three-four months) took a year. We called every date we planned to open our “Hope-ening” because we hoped it would be ready on that date. That date got pushed out 4+ times.
We also faced a roaster swap just two weeks before opening due to a harassment lawsuit they were going through. We had decided last minute that we could not support what was happening within their business and pulled out. I had a family friend @emmmeetscoffee who was an avid coffee lover and Barista & she pointed us to meet up with Equator Coffee.
The moment my lips hit their cup of drip, I knew they had something special going on. They were “the ones.” We were so lucky to be surrounded by a ton of wonderful people in our life who all helped us in so many ways.
With some guidance from Leah Pringle @redwindowcoffee to @equatorcoffee we feel so blessed to have so many hands & hearts touch our project.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Palm premises was based on the idea of a feeling we wanted to share… a vacation vibe right here in Burbank. We felt there was nothing like it… I wanted people to feel as if they cause to pause, take a moment here and soak in the light of the day. Read a book, chat with a friend.
Our decor was super important. Every design, every detail and every single product is carefully curated by myself. If I don’t like it, I will not serve it; says Joanna. I pride myself in selling the best of the best. Equator Organic Espresso, Coffee, Organic Milk (Strauss) & Matcha Tea (Tenzo Tea)
We carry non-GMO @Farmshopca Pastries, Breakfast Sandwiches, and Paninis, baked fresh and delivered daily plus tons of treats (Tates cookies, CBD coffee & drinks, and retail gift items, etc!
