Today we’d like to introduce you to Joan Betts.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
“I see paintings like people. They require layers to perfect. When completed, they are God’s masterpiece. Each one an original.” Joan Betts
1972, I was born in Hollywood, California, and raised in Garden Grove. At an extremely young age, I was exposed to art books and encouragement from my artistic, single mother. At 12, I was commissioned my first professional portrait, which led to my acceptance in the G.A.T.E. program in high school, compiling of various competitions and recognition in fine arts. With some college courses, I was primarily self-taught, which lead to hundreds of portraiture commissions. At 19, it was during these progressive years I found the love and forgiveness of God through Jesus Christ. This had a profound impact on my artistic outlook; however, I did not find my artistic gifts used often in the churches. My interest faded with the business of a typical young family life.
Today, things have drastically changed in my artistic journey, including a few churches. I’ve creatively learned to serve God and people through the arts by painting one canvas stories. It could be a personal message for an individual or a group of people. Never is a painting or drawing waisted, because it is telling a story of life using visuals that words may not express. Among the many artistic commitments, I volunteer my time by painting in healing rooms for those who are meditating and seek prayer due to personal sickness, emotional pain, or other needs. Additionally, I have painted on stage during worship for special church events.
My work is displayed at Hugo Rivera Art Gallery, in Laguna Beach. Along with Artlands Gallery, in Redlands. This Summer my works will be on display at the Laguna Art-A-Fair and various shows throughout the year.
Please tell us about your art.
I paint 3ft by 4ft canvas acrylic paintings, some smaller and some bigger. I work in most mediums but have longer seasons with painting. I illustrate many varieties of subjects: boats, landscapes, people, trees, etc. My subject matter comes with inspiration, vision, or commissions.
My prayer is that the subject matter triggers life, hope, and restoration. All of us get pounded down by life’s issues from time to time. We look to someone or something to encourage us. I want to illustrate a deep message through my work and those who look, will not just see a painting, rather something that speaks to them. The message is different for all; however, the art speaks.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Yes, I do! Every artist beats to a different drum. One might be at 100% maximum level of intensity to feel he/she has done a good job. The other who may be a free spirit and goes out with fresh paint on his/her clothes and does not care if their piece if perfectly done, but they are content with it. Whatever and however you are, just figure it out, so you don’t beat yourself up with comparing yourself to the next artist. You are an artist who needs to find your own style and yet be at liberty to change and grow when needed.
My newest personal revelation, as a lifelong portrait artist and perfectionist: If my personal work is flawed or not to perfection, God can use it. I’m learning that in my own weakness, He brings strength. That does not mean I don’t bring my best to the table; it means there is room for imperfection in art, as there is in people.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My business, Hokmah Art and Co., and personal Facebook is a great place to find out when and where I go to paint. I sell my pieces through Etsy, shows, and galleries I’m currently featured. Prayer is a great support; I firmly believe in it. Words of encouragement are always welcome. I love to hear what art means to people personally. Buying my art and reproductions of them is always appreciated. I have doors opening for teaching and an art fellowship starting in Laguna Hills this Summer, 2019.
