Meet Jo-Ann Capelaci of Jo-Ann Capelaci Interior Design in Thousand Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo-Ann Capelaci.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 1994, I began my first design business, Colours & Concepts, near Toronto Canada, with a business partner. We provided two services to builders; helping new home buyers choose the finishes and upgrading in their homes, and model homes.

In 2002, I moved to CA. I tried for a time to work remotely in this business however technology was much different than today and it didn’t work well. I ended my business partnership and no longer designed in Canada. I delved into trying to create a similar business in CA however that business model was much different and areas were so spread out that it didn’t pan out. So I worked as a lead designer for a design firm for a couple of years.

I am very much an entrepreneur and therefore wanted to forge my own path in design again and made the decision to once again start up my own design firm. About the time that I ventured on my own the economy in the United States began to falter. I was endeavoring to build new clients when many designers were closing up shop. For this reason, I kept my business at home to keep costs low. Fortunately, during these difficult times Mark Twain’s expression “find a job that you enjoy doing, and you will never work a day in your life” held true for me. My work was not too profitable at the time however each day I enjoyed working and designing for my clients.

Fast forward to 2012 and my former business partner, who is also a dear friend, wanted to travel more extensively and for long periods of time. I told her that I would be happy to work in Toronto overseeing Colours & Concepts in her absence. It was great reconnecting with those contacts in the new home building industry once again. I also discovered that I still had a strong connection with many clients from before. And it also allowed me to spend time with family and friends in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), Design was still flourishing in the Toronto area.

During this time, I continued building my interior design business in CA, Jo-Ann Capelaci Interior Design. Most of my work is referral and word of mouth. We specialize in whole house design, both remodeling and furnishings. We also do a lot of kitchen and bath design. My CA. clients are typically busy professional people who value our attention to detail and extensive design experience. The business slowly began to flourish.

Three years ago, Susan wanted to retire from the business and I made the decision to buy it back. Technology had improved vastly and I was able to work remotely with clients in both the US and Canada. I have a strong support team in both places and although still very hands-on with clients, this affords me the ability to travel back and forth. I now have a strong presence in both the GTA and Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Jo-Ann Capelaci Interior Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In California, we specialize in whole house design including kitchen and bath remodeling. Our business model works perfectly for the busy professional. What sets us apart is our analysis of every project, tailoring the design to suit our client’s needs and personal preferences. That is why when you look at our portfolio each project has a different feel that represents our client’s design preferences. We interview clients extensively, learning about their design requirements and personal tastes.

In Toronto we specialize in model home design. Our builder clients appreciate our boutique service, tailoring our design services to align with their requirements. They look to us for recommendations that speak to their target markets.

I believe our clients can feel our enthusiasm and knowledge of great design and want to be part of it!

What sets me apart from other designers is the varied experience in all areas of design. I am a great problem solver who consistently portrays that there are no problems, only solutions. I enjoy collaboration and want our clients to feel heard.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe life is about priorities and relationships. This translates both in my personal and professional life. When I see people’s lives enriched by the designs I create for them, it relates as success to me. I enjoy sharing my design knowledge to help people with budgets both large and small.

One client sums it up “I still walk through the house and am stunned at the transformation. I feel like a proud grandmother – I want to show it off all the time.” This is success for me.

From the outset of my own career in marketing in the Toronto new home industry I have had the great pleasure of working with Jo-Ann since she and Susan started out together as Colours & Concepts. In 2012 when she returned to Toronto I was delighted to be able to have her join forces with our marketing team on several projects and the model homes she created were nothing short of spectacular. A great asset to our marketing campaigns the model homes contributed very much to our sales success. Not only is Jo-Ann a delight to work with, her imagination and attention to detail bring a fresh perspective to every job. Especially valued was a commitment to stay on budget!!
