Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimena Ochoa.
Hi Jimena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am from Mexico, I moved to the U.S. (Chicago) in 2016 in order to study music as I wanted to be a performer. I finished school with multiple jobs in between to help me out as I did not want to ask too much from my parents. Made the move to LA with my boyfriend mid-pandemic. It’s been hard, honestly making a living outside of the music world with an arts major, but as I’ve had multiple experiences with different jobs, I’ve been able to get good jobs that pay enough money for rent and food. But I do not want to let go of my dreams. I have released 2 singles so far; realized it is not cheap to do this, so I was brainstorming what I could do in order to afford my dream. I’m really lucky that I found a second dream in that plan. Jewelry making!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been good and bad. I have an amazing family that has always believed in me; therefore, my issue was leaving them to come to the US. I know I’m having it easier financially, but I miss my family and friends so much. Slowly people stop messaging you as you do not see each other often. It’s been hard building a support system in a place where you really have no one that you know. I was really grateful I had my boyfriend when I moved to LA. He’s supported me in every project, from being my co-writer/producer to being my personal driver for every single one of my supply trips. It’s hard but with my partner, friends and family I know I can make anything happen.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a jewelry maker. I make everything by hand (Except the metal soldered items). My jewelry is mainly made out of polymer clay. I use gold-plated metal and I focus on using products that will lessen the probability of an allergic reaction. My skin is a bit sensitive with some items. Clay really will give no rashes. I am extremely proud of how much I have grown and learned on my own with this jewelry business. I did not think I was able to do something like that, but I was, and I am amazed at myself. Some people tell me to do what others do, but I genuinely love making art, so I want to stay true to my vision and my love, therefore my designs are thoroughly brainstormed and made with lots of care.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I have a bad habit; if I see something, I think I can a %100 do it with my own hands. But I guess it was a blessing, as I found my passion for jewelry making like that!
