Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Delany.
Jim Delany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been an entrepreneur my entire life starting with my first custom cabinet business at the age of 20. Since then I have started over a dozen businesses ranging from construction to light up hats to digital post production. Having been a licensed general contractor since 1986 has given me a solid financial springboard to experiment with different businesses and concepts. My addiction is the start-up, unfortunately once the business is successful my interests wander and it becomes time to sell or move on. As I get older my goals have changed and Lux Garage and Closet Inc. is an outgrowth of that change.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As anyone who has been down an entrepreneurial road knows, it is always changing. Financial as well as personal issues constantly change. Timing, good and bad decisions, your partners and the market are never constant and all demand a certain mindset that goes with the lifestyle.
I have had wildly successful runs where we explode and sell everything off and I have had disastrous failures that have nearly bankrupted me. All have been excellent teachers as to how to react to ongoing day to day issues as well as the vision and commitment needed to try to drive long term success.
I have learned one thing in particular, you are only as good as your employees. Great employees guided in the right direction create great opportunities. The most interesting as well as sad lesson learned is that sometimes a truly great person may not be able to transition from a 10 person shop to a 50 person business. This has played out many times for me and has greatly affected my management style.
Please tell us about Lux Garage and Closet.
Lux Garage and Closet started 2 years ago to address the custom closet and garage cabinet vacuum. Lux is a distributor for The Org Home products, a national custom cabinet supplier located in Michigan. For more than a quarter of a century, The Org Home products have been delighting customers with exceptional solutions and relationship based service. The company’s organization and storage systems touch every area of the home—closets, kitchen pantries, laundry and utility rooms, garages, mudrooms, offices, and beyond.
Lux was started by an experienced staff with intimate knowledge of the Org product line and its many attributes including affordability and excellent quality. Our staff includes designers, coordinators and installers. We visit a customer in their home and do a custom computer design on the spot which includes a visual representation and complete price. We will order your custom installation and be ready to install within 1-2 weeks. Our experienced in-house installers will arrive and install your new products typically within a day or two.
Lux has grown steadily over the last 2 years and has positioned itself as the premier vendor for garage and closet organization by concentrating on customer service and the highest quality products.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
