Meet Jill Emery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Emery.

Jill Emery

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started off by playing punk rock when I was 16, so I definitely follow a DIY ethics. I did art throughout my music career but took it seriously when I was about 40, trying to develop a style that felt true to me. Falling under the style of outsider Folk art. I like to paint whatever comes to me, which would be musicians like Patti Smith, David Berman, Fugazi, or lending a voice to animals. Really anything that strikes my fancy could even be a vintage phone calling Bob Dylan discussing ideas.

I do gallery shows, record covers. This is pretty much where I am today. I am grateful I’m enjoying the moment, and I’m just living.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think any road is really smooth. I think the bumps are what kind of jolt us into a development, but staying steady with our hands on the wheels or at least our thoughts in our minds?

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a painter I hope I am known as a painter a lot of times people remember me as a bass player in many different bands most likely, Mazzy Star, Hole, Super heroines and many others in LA.

People may have seen my work on the back of Holes Pretty on the inside record I did the painting.

And most recently, I did the cover of the Marianne Faithfull tribute record called The Faithful. So many great musicians on there.

Well, I guess what I’m most proud of. Is that when people really ‘get’ my work, it’s such a great feeling the connection of ideas. Any way it happens, I just continue to work.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My mom and I singing Queens of Noise by The Runaways; we all just think our parents are parents, but that day, she let her hair down, and we just were goofing around singing
