Meet Jessica Roch of Home Alone Animal Care in Chatsworth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Roch.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up riding horses and volunteering at horse rescue ranches which also had dogs, cats, reptiles and birds. This started my path on how to care for different species of animals from cleaning enclosures to medical necessities. While in college, 18 years ago, a family friend asked me if I would care for their animals while they were on vacation and I said yes. When they returned, they paid me for my time and service and asked if I would do it again and can they tell their friends about me. I thought this is a great way to help with college expenses while doing something I enjoyed. So, began my pet sitting business. During the last 18 years, I worked at a veterinarian hospital expanding my knowledge in pet healthcare which I am able to use in my business such as insulin injections and administering subcutaneous fluids. I also attended and graduated from America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, Exotic Animal Training and Management Program. One of the best things I have ever done. I learned so much about animal behavior and training which definitely contributes to my business. I am able to understand dog behavior in new ways allowing me to bring different dogs together in my home.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I consider my business to be more of a luxury than a necessity so naturally, over the years some clients come and go. And of course, our pet family members don’t have as many years as we do on this planet so I’ve seen a lot of loss in that sense as well. I become close to all of my client’s furbabies so it’s a hard time to go through.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Home Alone Animal Care – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I love what I do! I get to play with peoples dogs and cats while they are on vacation or business trip. I have a half acre property in Chatsworth where dogs get to run around freely and nap under a tree or in the house on a plush bed or couch. I have a cage-free boarding and doggie daycare business. I am able to run this business with the experience and knowledge I have gained over all my years of working with animals and all the people who have taught me what I know today. I also could not do this without the support and encouragement from my parents who have believed in me and supported my decision to want to work with animals.

I like to keep my number of dogs that I have at one time low to ensure their comfort, safety and well-being.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I recently changed my business from pet sitting at the homeowner’s house to boarding at my own house. I still do house calls for my clients who have cats or other pets that are more comfortable in their own home. I would like to include grooming in the near future.
