Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rea.
Jessica, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Anything beauty I learned on my own because my mom is a tomboy and naturally beautiful. I used to work at Chevrolet as a head cashier so I was always behind a computer screen. Although I shouldn’t have been, I would spend most of my day browsing through different makeup websites. I would spend a lot of my free time watching makeup tutorials on YouTube because I was so fascinated with what makeup could do and how much joy it brought to others. Suddenly it dawned upon me that I really loved makeup. It was right then and there that I had decided to quit my job and go to makeup school. I can now, gratefully, say I have work in stores like Target and Walmart. That is something I prayed for when I first began my makeup journey. My main goal is to make others feel beautiful and smile when they let me use their face as a canvas.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh my goodness, no! Haha not at all! I actually hit a creatives block, (like writer’s block but for creatives/artists), for almost two years. Within those two years, I worked at an eCommerce fashion line for about a year and a half. There was no room for creativity. It got so repetitive that my life began to feel mundane and everything around me felt stagnant. I felt as if I had lost all my creativity. I gave myself a long break and even turned down jobs. I didn’t even want to look at my kit. I forced myself to accept jobs and overtime I remembered how much I loved doing makeup on others. A lot of it had to do with putting my energy and mind in the right places.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist based in Los Angeles. I specialize in beauty artistry- mainly print, however, I do want to start dabbling into film makeup. I’m most proud of having my work in huge stores for a very well known drugstore makeup brand.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I got very lucky that my sister was already a signed model and knew many photographers. My best friend is also a signed model. It’s such a blessing being able to create and work with both my best friend and sister.
