Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Graham.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a spiritual and sexual activist, author, sex and intimacy guide, meditation teacher, I grew up on the east coast and raised by beautiful and terrible wolves. They taught me about art, spirituality, film, activism, creativity, and sex. It was a home of mental illness and alcoholism, so there were dark sides too. I was on my own at 14, and had very little traditional education. I’m a true autodidact. My mom taught me to meditate when I was little. For my 6th birthday I had everyone stand in a circle, hold hands and meditate. I got really far away from my spiritual practice while I survived my teens and 20’s. In my late 20’s I started meditating daily and experienced a series of paradigm-shifting awakenings that completely changed my reality. Shortly after that I was asked to start teaching. I soon began writing for Deconstructing Yourself, a popular meditation blog and created a series called Mindful Sex, Since then, I have co-created The Eastside Mindfulness Collective (a group of like-hearted individuals dedicated to mindful living and learning, which offers many weekly classes), Wild Awakening (my sexual and spiritual guidance through private sessions, workshops, speaking engagements, classes, and retreats), and had my book, Good Sex: Getting Off without Checking Out, published by North Atlantic Books. I’m now stepping into more speaking and writing on what I call, Spiritual and Sexual Activism.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Before my life really changed for the better I had to quit drinking. That was not easy to do, but was the first step in towards a life with a lot less suffering. I haven’t found the need to drink since then.
I’ve been diagnosed with Chronic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as a result of the trauma I experienced as a child and teen. My recovery from this has been my biggest life accomplishment, although I continue to deal with the health issues caused by PTSD. I’m diagnosed with a list of chronic illnesses, and live with chronic pain. Meditation helps a lot with this, but it’s not always an easy road.
My father died in 2007 from cancer caused by alcoholism. He and I had an incredibly close relationship, but no without its challenges. He became my drinking and drugging buddy when I was only 14, at which time he had already been to rehab and jail for DUIs. I got the chance to care for him in his final days, which was an amazing experience. I write about my dad, our relationship and his death in a series called Dying with Dad on Deconstructing Yourself.

My Book:
Good Sex: Getting Off without Checking Out
Far from a cookie-cutter approach to sex, meditation and mindfulness, Good Sex shares Graham’s own transformation from traumatized, checked-out and disengaged to sexually awakened, inspired and in-the-moment. Her sex-positive attitude and inclusive, open approach to everything from non-monogamy to BDSM provides readers a safe space to explore their sexuality, and is supplemented with practical meditation, journaling and mindfulness exercises. In Good Sex, Graham teaches us about intimacy, love, fucking, compassion and our own hearts and minds, encouraging us to live our most authentic lives in and out of the bedroom.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Exploring the forest with my dad and sisters. Playing in the creek and pretending the moss underwater was mermaid hair. Filling our claw foot tub with cool water and flower petals and pretending to be a fairy. My mom reading e.e. cummings to me.
