Meet Jessica Gardner of Glass Ceilings in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gardner.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for musical theater started in my childhood and only increased as I studied it at the University of Central Florida. I can remember when my mom came home with the full original cast recording of Les Mis and told me I needed to listen to it. It struck a chord that still resonates to this day.

Film and television acting have always been front and center in my career, but when I got the opportunity to join the creative team of Laura Watkins and Nicholas David Brandt as director of their first musical, Comic-Con the Musical, I felt incredibly inspired. The important subject matter of their latest musical – Glass Ceilings – makes me even more driven. This show is something that everyone – male, female, young, old – should see. To have an impact on something like that… that’s the dream.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This is my first time producing, so there have definitely been some learning curves. Securing funding is one. Getting attention in a crowded entertainment space is another. The easiest part has been to guide our talented cast to a place of truth, and I hope that delivering a great show will help our musical break through those specific barriers. Everyone who hears the synopsis of our musical immediately “gets it” and tells me they want to see and hear it, so I have my fingers crossed that it resonates with people even more once they do.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Glass Ceilings – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Glass Ceilings is a musical about women throughout history whose stories you should know but probably don’t. As a female-centric production – 11 women in the cast and only two men – we’re uniquely situated to bring these stories to life in front of audiences. I’m proud of the material drew in this high level of performers. It’s been a dream to work with Broadway vets and watch as they make the parts their own.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Throughout March – which appropriately, is Women’s History Month – we’ll be performing on weekends at Rockwell Table and Stage. It is our desire to seize this opportunity to propel the musical – hopefully to the Broadway stage! Beyond that, a regional premiere would be another important step on our journey.

Personally, working on this show has really reminded me of how much I love directing musicals, and I hope direct even more!
