Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Holguin.
Jesse, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was the fat kid. In fact, most of my childhood memories are feelings of being different and not fitting in. When I graduated high school I easily weighed over 300lbs.
I was a happy kid, I had lots of friends and my family is amazing but with all of that being overweight still took its toll on me physically, mentally and spiritually.
I’ve always felt that we are all born to do great things, especially myself. But I also had this overwhelming feeling that if I was to make any kind of dent in the world, I had to start with myself. There’s no doubt that limiting beliefs came into play. There wasn’t a day that went by where I didn’t feel as though I was cursed, that I was dealt the bad genetic card and I was destined to live a life of being overweight. Finally, around the age of 20 I hit rock bottom emotionally and physically… but that was what I needed to change. Something switched inside of me and I made a decision to do whatever it took to lose all the weight.
Fortunately, I had some guidance in the exercise and nutrition world. And for the next 18 months I did everything I was told to do and beyond. I lost pretty much all the weight in less than 2 years and I’ve never taken a step backwards since. In fact, it’s become my passion. I’ve since then learned from some of the best in the industry to help further my progress but more importantly to help those who are walking the path that I once walked as an overweight being looking for help and belief that it’s possible. It’s been almost twenty years since I was heavy and now I own and operate The WELLROCK Wellness, Strength & Conditioning. And I am fortunate to help people transform their lives every day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Looking back, I could have saved myself much heartache if I would have celebrated the small wins along the way. So the lesson I had to learn was that of being grateful. But now I am grateful for all the small moments of victory, it makes life so much more effortless and it allows me to think bigger and play in possibilities. So in a way I guess I wouldn’t go back and change it, because I’m happy with where it brought me.
Please tell us about The WellRock.
At the WellRock, we reconnect people to themselves. And what I mean by that is most people are disconnected with the things they should be doing to take of their physical, mental and spiritual health.
A lot of people walk through our doors expecting to just workout and thinking that exercise alone will eliminate most of the problems that brought them to us. But we know it’s more than that, there’s going to have to be small changes done over time to their lifestyle. I mean even if you work out intensely 5 times a week for 60 minutes each time that still only represents 5 hours out of 168 total hours in the week. Our bodies will need better nutrition, sleep and stress management systems to truly thrive. And it’s not a quick fix, all of the people we work with want change, I feel they know deep down inside that it’s time to make some changes but that they’re going to need help. Then they find us, and that’s where we thrive, in seeing the possibility in everyone who walks through our doors. Yes, we have great systems to exercise the body, but it’s our ability to connect and guide everyone to living a healthier life that keeps us growing and celebrating all the victories we see in our clients.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing, I had to go through all my struggles and setbacks to become and create what I have today. I’m just glad I never stopped believing.
