Meet Jesca Cluff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesca Cluff.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was obsessed with snapping “artsy” photos of nature when I was a little kid. I’d fill up my family’s disposable cameras and always get in trouble when the film would come back with more photos of flowers than family candids. I got my first DSLR in college and through my school work learned portraiture and lighting. I started doing more and more collaborations with makeup artists and that led me down the path to shooting beauty and cosmetics.

Please tell us about your art.
I shoot commercial beauty and product photography. I love collaborating with teams of hair, makeup, and wardrobe to create cohesive and elegant looks. As a lover of nature and femininity, I often incorporate flowers and other natural elements into my work. I hope people find a calm moment away from a hectic day when looking at my photos. A small corner of beauty in the world. Sadly, last year, I lost my little brother to suicide. And it’s made me re-evaluate my work. I want to push my boundaries and shoot more than just a pretty face.

This year, I plan to get more involved in activism. And I hope to incorporate more stories and help those in need. I want to share more stories about mental health. I’ve seen so much loss and hurt in the world due to our broken healthcare system. I want to raise awareness to the problems I see and use my voice and my work to help the world for the better.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Don’t compare yourself to other artists so much. Your path and your place in the industry is never dependent on what others are doing. It’s not about getting ahead of them, it’s about blazing your own trail. Community over the competition is so true. You’ll find more success and happiness in supporting and celebrating other artist’s work rather than nit-picking and comparing your own work to theirs.
