Hi Jerlicia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a self-taught, professional makeup artist with 8 years of professional experience. Starting off at an HBCU, I had no intentions of doing makeup professionally. Since the launch of my makeup career, I’ve hosted several sold-out makeup classes, worked on tv shows, travelled internationally for clients, and went on 2 tours. I’d say this career chose me, and I’m enjoying the journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth journey, however, who has had it super easy? Anything you are destined or desired to have or be won’t come easy, but it’s absolutely rewarding. The trials and tribulations will be the greatest teachers and best experience for whatever it is you do. One of my main struggles were confidence in having makeup be a full-time career because I was always taught to go to college and get a 9-5. As we can see, that wasn’t for me because I now make my own schedule and I’ve been the happiest in my life since leaving my other job. Entrepreneurship is not easy, and it’s a continual process of trial and error plus growth!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a full-time, professional, self-taught makeup artist. I work with large brands, celebrities, and local everyday women. I’m probably most known for at the moment for being flown all over with clients to meet their glam needs which allows my work to be featured and seen on television, in magazines, on billboards, and accredited blogs worldwide. I’m most proud of not giving up and giving out. Being a mom and having the career I have is not traditional, nor is it at times conventional. I’m super grateful for my family for all the support and help so that I can be able to fulfill my life the way it is set up for me.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me, is believing in yourself and achieving the very thing that gives you joy. That could be financial status, reaching the masses, empowering others, or overcoming an obstacle.
