Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Taitz, Psy.D. ABPP.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Taitz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
LA CBT DBT, my private therapy practice, opened last year and my new book, How to be Single and Happy: Science-Based Strategies for Keeping your Sanity While Looking for a Soul Mate, was published this month. After spending more than a decade in New York City, I recently returned back to my hometown and am passionate about spreading hopeful messages rooted in science.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the question: How can we live our best lives? Beyond just feeling happy, what is the most strategic path to fulfillment? I feel really fortunate to have studied evidence-based approaches, as effective as medication for problems like anxiety and depression, to help people who feel stuck to not only find freedom, but to also build enriching lives. Over the years, I’ve noticed many of my patients struggling while looking for love and many popular dating books seems both sexist and lacking psychological validity. My clients’ experiences, as well as my personal story, inspired me to write a compassionate book for people who notice that looking for love is stressing them out.
LA is such a beautiful city and so many of us feel preoccupied by the quest to perfect our appearances. My mission is to teach people tangible tools to actually live better. As board certified Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) therapist, I incorporate mindfulness, acceptance, and motivational enhancement with traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I have expertise in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and find meaning in helping people practice willingness to commit to their values by gaining distance from thoughts and behaviors that get in the way of meaningful actions.
Often, people think of therapy as a passive, judgmental, time-consuming experience. So many people wait to somehow feel better and I hope to encourage people who are suffering to seek out help with an experienced professional since there are approaches that are effective, compassionate and time-sensitive.
Has it been a smooth road?
Most writers will tell you that writing a book a dream and also pretty torturous. Writing How to be Single and Happy stretched me — I share more about my personal experience than I typically reveal and I had to dive deep into reviewing hundreds of research papers since my mission was to stay true to science. Also, my son, Eli, was due to arrive two weeks after my book deadline. I’ll never forget the pain and joy of writing through contractions.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
LA CBT DBT is a discrete, boutique, private therapy practice prioritizing compassionate, effective, and time-sensitive therapy. My approach is to get clear of what you care about and track behavioral goals so we know that you are moving towards what matters to you.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love LA though many of my clients describe how focused we all are on appearance vs. depth and heart.
