Meet Jenny Mahoney of Lily’s Color Lab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Mahoney

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey with Lily’s Color Lab started from a very common frustration—everytime I went to the salon to have my hair done, it never quite looked right. I kept trying different looks and spent copious amounts of hard-earned money on results that left me disappointed. Then I stumbled upon color analysis and it was a breakthrough moment. I finally understood why certain colors worked for me while others didn’t.

Beyond just hair, I learned how color analysis could help me to make better choices in regard to clothing and cosmetics—saving time, money, and frustration by only investing in what truly flattered me.

I fell in love with the process and saw how valuable this would be for others, so I signed myself up for formal color analysis training.

I started Lily’s Color Lab as a small side business, but the demand quickly grew. I focused on assembling and training a team of expert analysts, and soon we expanded beyond our first location. We now have studios in NYC, DC, Orange County and our newest in Los Angeles opening in February.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing a bi-coastal brand while being in law school full-time has been an invigorating challenge, but I’m passionate about what we’re building. At its heart, Lily’s Color Lab is about helping people feel more confident and empowered in the often intimidating world of fashion and beauty.

We’ve been impressed with Lily’s Color Lab, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in the 12-season color analysis system, which helps clients discover their most flattering colors for clothing, makeup, and hair.

What sets us apart from many competitors is our truly personalized approach. While many color analysis services advertise 12- or 16-season systems, clients often walk away with generic four-season advice and broad swatch books—an outdated approach. At Lily’s Color Lab, we take a modern, nuanced approach that makes a real impact on how our clients apply their colors in daily life. For example, the difference between a Cool Winter and a Dark Winter is significant, and we ensure our clients understand those distinctions. Instead of receiving a one-size-fits-all swatch book, they leave with a tailored palette and clear, practical guidance to help them confidently incorporate their best colors into their wardrobe, makeup, and hair choices.

I’m proud of how Lily’s Color Lab has grown—what started as a side business has expanded into a multi-location brand with expanded service offerings like body typing, cosmetics, and more to come. Being in a position to offer our confidence-building services to a wider audience is incredibly rewarding.

At the core of our work is a belief that color analysis isn’t about limitations—it’s about empowerment. We want every person who walks through our doors to feel more confident, polished, and excited about their personal style.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people don’t know about me is that I didn’t start out in the beauty or fashion industry—I’ve spent most of my career in administrative settings with the goal of becoming a lawyer. I actually discovered color analysis because I was frustrated with my own hair color. When I finally had a professional color analysis, everything clicked. That experience was so eye-opening that I became obsessed with the science behind color. The rest is history!
