Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Mitchell.
Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Snazzydeco when I began experimenting with sketching and hand making vintage inspired polymer clay pendants and earrings in 2010 while working as a kitchen designer. I loved the colors, patterns, and forms of interiors from the 40s through 90s and used the retro kitchens I would encounter, as well as photos from my collection of vintage interior design books, as inspiration. In 2016 I expanded my business to include vintage jewelry. I love searching for beautiful and bold jewelry everywhere I go and enjoy selling incredible finds on Etsy. I am also constantly experimenting with different ways to make vintage inspired, nostalgic jewelry. My latest designs are chandelier earrings and collage earrings with lots of vintage beads, charms, Victorian flowers, dice, and 40s style notions.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having your own creative business involves a lot of trial and error. It is always a challenge to see what sells and what doesn’t, what is retro and in style (or retro and out of style!), and if what looks awesome to you as the designer is something that your customers will fall in love with too and want to wear. The road has been neither smooth nor bumpy, but just filled with lots of hard work and evolving handmade designs and seeking out more vintage jewelry types that are exactly what my customers are looking for.
Snazzydeco Designs & Vintage – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Snazzydeco’s specialties are: vintage inspired handmade jewelry (primarily Victorian style, Art Deco style, 40s, and 80s style handmade) that is bold, funky, happy, colorful, and nostalgic AND vintage jewelry from the 30s through 90s. I love big bold vintage plastic jewelry and have a great selection of 60s through 90s pieces for sale. The 90s are back and I love stocking bold bright plastic bangles, earrings, and necklaces from the early through mid-90s. 80s and 90s vintage are my specialties!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My customers’ happiness is my success. When someone buys vintage or handmade jewelry from me and loves what he or she receives from my Etsy shop, it makes my day. Success is when my colorful nostalgic or vintage jewelry makes my customers smile.
