Meet Jennifer Han of Nail Designer J in Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Han.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I used to work as a dental assistant for a long time but I have a very stubborn & bossy personality so it was very hard for me to work under someone’s command, tied up to their hours not able to set my own schedules… so I started to think ‘what will be the fast way for me to become a boss?’ and I start thinking about opening a nail salon. Not just because I wanted to be a boss, because I used to paint before and love to getting my nails done as well so why not? I thought it will be fun to paint on a small palette, see how people will like it and felt like I can totally nailed it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was very hard when I first started, I had no clients, wasn’t able to make money for my rents and any payments. Everyone was telling me ‘you need some time to build your clients, just give it some time’, it will be a lie if I say I never doubted about my choice but I didn’t wanted to give up because I knew that I can do better. Even though I did art before, I knew I had to practice a lot, so every day I spent about 5-6 hours (I had a lot of time back then because I didn’t had a lot of clients) drawing/putting jewelry/extensions… constantly watching YouTube to practice, work on my nails. There will be always new trends & supplies so I had to make sure to get them and practice again. Because when my clients ask for some design, I hate to say ‘oh I’m sorry, I don’t have that or I don’t know how to do that art’. After practice and practice, I am finally here now.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nail Designer J – what should we know?
I hate to lose or feels like I am lack of something if there is a new supplies or trends, I need to get them and I need to learn. So there won’t be a time when I will say ‘oh, I am sorry, I can not do this design’. I am very confident about my artwork. Especially on hand free drawings. I am specialized in character designs. I love to see my client’s smile after my service. It makes me happy and reminds me that this is the main reason that I love my job.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Never give up, never lose hope and don’t be afraid to try & learn new things.
