Meet Jenifer Porter of The House of Porter Home & Garden Atelier in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenifer Porter.

Jenifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am in an interior designer and real estate agent. I am a 4th generation Angeleno. I was born into a family of real estate and currently live in Brentwood with my husband, 4 kids, 3 dogs and 5 chickens. I love anything design & home oriented. I founded The House of Porter, a full service interior design build studio and home goods shop this spring Montana Avenue. My hope is that all who enter as guests leave as friends. I wanted to create and have a stress – free environment for clients to explore. I have worked with a diverse clientele ranging from luxury apartment buildings to large custom homes. I am currently finishing a recent project. The home sits on one acre, and is 16,000 square feet in Mandeville Canyon. I call it my “Modern Farmhouse” with a European touch. My goal is to share my coveted black book of resources and to help my clients create a beautiful, comfortable place they can call home. My aesthetic is chic, luxurious and relaxed. In my spare time I like to offer my expertise to various nonprofits throughout Los Angeles. I currently sit on the board of The Harmony Project.

Has it been a smooth road?
There is a lot of competition and challenges in the design world. I have had many obstacles to overcome along the way. I am completely self-taught having not graduated from college or design school. My education came from traveling the world, pounding the pavement and wanting to see how others lived along the way. I always found inspiration while living my day to day life. I never imagined my life the way it is now. I am a people connecting kind of girl and I love meeting new clients and helping them to make their house a home.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The House of Porter is a design & build firm on LA’s west side. We do everything but are experts in the key family gathering spots – kitchen, dining, living & family rooms. We offer immediate gratification items that include candles, linens, pillows and accessories. We offer third line items that include fabric, paint, wallpaper and shades, and The House of Porter custom lines include chairs, tables, sofas and other customized pieces. We are a lifestyle brand that blends the beautiful business of interior design with the personal experience of customized shopping. The House of Porter is a one – stop shop with both ground up construction as well as one – off design services, and a curated selection of other needs. Site accessories (candles, books, linens, etc.) located at 1207 Montana Avenue.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a great place to be an interior designer. We have so many resources here to explore. You have to hit the road and seek out all the little gems LA has to offer. There are many small business owners like myself who support small business brick and mortar shops. If all you had to do was shop on Amazon, you would lose the touch & feel experience of creating a home. My advice to young interior designers just starting out is to get off your computer and cell. Go meet your vendors and connect face to face. It is all about relationships.
