Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Hall.
Jeff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a designer in the entertainment industry for almost 3 decades, which is a very humbling statement.
As an undergraduate student at ASU, I studied art and architecture with an emphasis on theatre design. It was the theatre and design that lead me to my MFA in scenic design from UCI. The art was my passion but I was seduced early on by the process of collaboration. It was the idea that working with different disciplines would actually make the end result stronger and have a deeper visual impact.
In many ways, my early design development can be attributed to taking big bold risks- a practice that continues to lead my charge as an artist. I believe we are, each, unique, biological organisms capable of unique, artistic visions.
After graduation, I went to work in an entertainment design firm, that designed theme parks, concerts, award shows, and TV extravaganzas. This was a factory of design and ideas. I was surrounded by a combination of professional and academic peers all striving to produce interesting visual statements. I was hooked! This was going to be my future and my artistic compass.
Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with the biggest and brightest Icons in Art, Fashion, Theatre, Multimedia, and now social media.
Has it been a smooth road?
As the principal designer at the JHD Group, it is important that every member of the staff and design team work toward the same goal, which is delivering a design on time and on budget. The group is comprised of designers, architects, and visual artists, so we are surrounded and inspired to push the medium forward.
As designers and Art Directors, our job requires us to be the authority on design. Our skills not only require cutting-edge design, but also the ability to problem solve. Over the years, we have seen budgets shrink and expectations rise while technology continues to advance. This is a real challenge- balancing art and commerce.
The JHD Group continues to develop and adapt to the ever-changing landscape. We make a conscious effort not to succumb to current trends, but instead, keep the design centered around the “idea”. The idea brings the excitement and collaboration to the front of the line.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The city of LA is intoxicating and inspiring. It has been my home for 51 years and rarely disappoints.
The business of design can transcend to any city, but the heart of the entertainment world still operates in LA.
I like to think that LA brings a distinct point-of-view, anesthetic, to relationships with my staff and peers. My “pov” leans heavily toward the risky, the extraordinary and the utterly personal. But, recognizing that some designers with a strong connection to the traditional and commercially-viable, Los Angeles delivers!
