Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanette Lucero.
Jeanette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a wife of almost 20 years, mother of three (Samantha 20, Montessa 16 and Ambrose 9), and a Health Mindset Coach.
The story that has lead me to my life’s purpose of freeing women from the “dieter’s mindset” really began at a very young age. Growing up, I witnessed my loving mother severely suffering from self-hatred of her body, shame around her weight and size, and in turn, yo-yo dieted to the extreme and still does, looking for the answers in dieting of what the real issues were. I remember having thoughts very clearly at a young age of “I will never do that” and “why does she do it that way over and over and over”. As a child to see your mother struggle so much was painful and I felt I could never help.
In 1999, I discovered I was going to have an unplanned pregnancy. I was only 19 and had never contemplated a child. My pregnancy was 100% out of control with eating and I ended up gaining 70lbs and was left with 55 to lose. But something happened once I met my child. It was a pivotal moment in time where I began my life’s purpose in living a healthy lifestyle and giving her the best in health. I went from being totally unaware of my health to overnight having 100% awareness for my own health and my child’s health.
Over the course of the next 13 years as a stay-at-home mother, my passion for health grew deep. By 2008 family was living 95% organic and I had a strong fitness lifestyle with long-distance running and weight training, and a deep love for all things nutrition. I had brought my family to an exemplary place in health and started to have a calling to teach this to women who shared in the same struggle my mother did and still does.
In 2013, I began my journey as a coach and became a certified life coach. I immediately upon becoming certified opened my practice 85/15 Lifestyle™, an all women’s health coaching practice. While working out the business logistics, I needed a name that represented the model of living of which I understood would help women stay on track, not feel restricted, and still see success in health, what I knew I could teach them. The name I choose and model is the 85/15 Lifestyle™.
85% is your NEEDS and what must get done in health, even in the most basic foundational needs. Things like reaching your basic needs with your water intake, your weekly exercise needs, getting in your three servings of greens a day, etc.
Then there is 15%, the things you love and do not want to live without. 2-3 food items that, if you were placed on an island, you would not want to live without.
When this model of living is followed TRUE, LASTING success is found for many reasons but one that stands above all. Clarity is reached in health on exact needs and wants around that woman’s life. NOT a diet that tells her how to live. It places the woman in charge of her own health and begins her at a place that is manageable without every overturning her life for a diet.
The 85/15 Lifestyle™ model has worked extremely well with the women I’ve coached over the last seven years and I am now on a mission to increase the volume of women I help with this. This year I moved my practice 100% online. I currently am in the process of launching a 30-day course around health. As well I have several free trainings on the website, offer workshops, have a quickly growing Facebook group, podcast and offer online group coaching.
Coaching women using 85/15 Lifestyle™ has brought immense peace every day in that maybe one more woman will not suffer in the dieter’s mentality and yo-yo dieting.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has not been an easy road.
I remember early on while coaching in my practice, not seeing the results with women returning back to each session that I felt I should. It took a lot of personal development to realize some of the gaps that needed to be filled in creating accountability. One of the ways I created this was through becoming a person of my word myself more. Saying what I meant and meaning what I said. Once I learned this for myself, I then developed an exercise to use with clients called POW, Person Of Your Word. I use this exercise and document to this day and have found huge success with it, but that learning curve was tough. I felt like I was failing.
Another struggle I have faced in building and growing my practice was around scaling it. I spent five years serving women in a one-on-one coaching format in person through a brick and mortar location. I could never figure out how to scale and grow with this model. It was so frustrating that in 2018 I decided to close my doors on my location. In 2019 I had an epiphany on how I could begin growing coaching women with online group coaching. That is when I hosted my first group of women coaching online and in 2020 opened my practice 100% online with digital courses, online group coaching, a quickly growing Facebook group, and podcast. I am now scaling in ways I’ve dreamed of. But again, that first five years of failing at scaling in person was a brutal five years. I always felt like the underdog and behind as a coach.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about 85/15 Lifestyle™ – what should we know?
My business name is 85/15 Lifestyle™. The 85/15 Lifestyle™ is a model of living I use in teaching women how to achieve a healthy lifestyle and not another yo-yo diet.
I am best known personally for all things health, including fitness and nutrition. As a coach, I am best known for teaching in the health mindset or what I call the “missing link” in health for women. The women I work with and who come to me for coaching are in search of a healthy lifestyle and not another diet. They suffer from the “dieter’s mindset” and are stuck in a pattern with dieting or the “I’ll start Monday” mentality and in turn, are lead to extremely low self-esteem and feeling like failures.
What I teach these women is how to start from the ground up with health using the 85/15 Lifestyle™ model. 85% are your needs and what must get done, 15% are your wants and what you really want to do. This model teaches them how to achieve some of the most important and often neglected baseline foundational needs in their health FIRST and teaches them how to give themselves permission to then enjoy the things they truly love guilt-free. For example; 85% might be a week of reaching four basic foundational health needs daily consisting of water intake, veggies, protein, and vitamins. Once these checkboxes have been checked off in reaching the basic daily foundational needs, they then enjoy a night or even two nights of a 15% want in food and/or drinks depending on the woman’s goals and start point. Most of the women I work with have seven days of basic needs with their 85% and two evenings of enjoying their 15%.
What sets me as a coach and the model I teach under apart is the ability to use a very indirect and positive approach in a way that the women never feel deprived or restricted. They feel in charge, clear, and focused. Versus a diet that has unrealistic, unmanageable long-term expectations that cannot be sustained.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family has been my hidden gem! My husband John and three children Samantha, Montessa, and Ambrose have never swayed with their support to see me grow as a coach. I would easily consider them my secret weapon to success in that I always know they are right behind me cheering me on. Most of the time that’s all I really need.
I have had countless coaching through the years but I do have to say that the most recent coaching I have been receiving has been bar none.
Tony Robbins Personal Development 30 Day Online Course, as well as his first-ever Virtual UPW, has had a great impact on my ability to increase productivity and hone in more on my passion without letting challenges and hurdles stop me by understanding how to maintain a positive state.
I used an online course for developing courses called Wifi Warriors with a very talented coach Morgan Eliz. The course is very robust and extremely informative. I wouldn’t be where I am now without her course.
I recently hired Business Coach Nancy Evans of BYOB Agency that has been life-changing. She is a master at helping organize my business into easy to manage steps with marketing and growth. I am incredibly grateful to her.
Lastly, I would have to thank LeadHers a mastermind group I am part of. The women in this group have been that circle of influence I’ve dreamed of that understand the day-to-day challenges as a business owner, coach, woman, mother, and wife. We all hold sacred space for each other to just simply be. This is hard to find and I am blessed to have found them.
