Meet Jazmin Jimenez of Brujita Min Candles in San Pedro (South Bay/Harbor)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Jimenez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jazmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started making candles as a hobby in 2018 for friends and family but it wasn’t until COVID hit that I really sat down and started making them with the intention to start a business. The idea came when I was looking for Latinx owned and wonderfully scented black bruja candles. When I realized there wasn’t any, I set out to make some myself! The name was the easiest part: before my mom passed away she would always call me her Brujita Min (little witch Min) whenever I would talk about magic and brujeria. What I struggled with was the branding. I wanted something black and witchy but with a lighthearted image. I didn’t set out to create something for everyone, but I wanted to create something anyone could enjoy. Growing up in Catholic community, I was well aware that any pentagram or Wiccan sigils was going to be a big no no in any Mexican household. With my mom in mind, I created candles that reflected my identify, my beliefs, and myself.

Has it been a smooth road?
I started my business on July 1st, 2020 so I’ve only been open for a very short time. I’m thankful to have the help and support of friends and family especially when it came to navigating the e-commerce world and getting started on selling/shipping candles online! In the beginning is was extremely overwhelming because there were so many decisions to be made and so much time spent testing out waxes, candle packaging, scents, label design, website design, navigating shipping costs, and creating a quality product. Honestly, if these last few months have taught me anything is that I still have a long way to go!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I must be honest, as a new business I’m figuring out all this stuff on the way. But one thing I’m definitely proud of is the fact that I strive to keep my business as eco-friendly as I can. I use natural coconut soy wax (instead of paraffin which is a petroleum by-product), recycle all shipping materials, use an FSC Certified wooden wick, and don’t use plastic in any of my packaging. Even the packing peanuts are biodegradable!

As far as what I do, I handle all aspects of the business except the artwork. I’ve always said I’m a creative person but don’t have the slightest artistic skills!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
My business is primarily online but being in LA allows me to connect with a lot of amazing shops and be a part of craft fairs and events! I’m looking forward to things getting back to normal to be a part of more vendor fairs!
