Meet Jayc Umali of issasnacktime. in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayc Umali.

Jayc, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I launched issasnacktime. January of this year – a little backstory, I am a first-generation Filipino, born and raised in Los Angeles. I moved to San Diego two months after I graduated high school. I felt I needed to get out of my comfort zone to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I eventually enrolled myself in the culinary program at San Diego Mesa College and immediately fell in love. About two years into the program, I decided to move back to Los Angeles and pursue my Bachelor’s in Culinary Management at the Art Institute in North Hollywood. I’ve worked a few restaurant jobs here and there but always knew my main goal was to be my own boss. I finally grew the courage to start issasnacktime. After gaining some knowledge of the business world during my MBA program.

I’ve always had a deep love for food – ESPECIALLY sweets. My grandparents owned a few bakeries in the Philippines so I grew up with the fresh smell of pandesal lingering our home whenever they would come to visit. OH & my mom can get down in the kitchen – she also had a side catering business that my sisters and I would help her with. I guess I can say I grew up in the kitchen, and at the time didn’t know I would find my career in there.

Has it been a smooth road?
To be completely honest, it has. The only obstacle I’ve really come across was trying to find flour during the beginning of the pandemic. I literally couldn’t find it anywhere! Hahaha!

I really feel like God had a plan for me like I was meant to start issasnacktime. Early this year. As weird as it sounds, this pandemic was a blessing in disguise for me. I was so busy with school and my 9-5, I really didn’t know how I was going to balance everything while keeping a healthy lifestyle. But being furloughed from my job gave me the time to focus all my attention on my company.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with issasnacktime. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
issasnacktime. Specializes in very rare baked goods. I make cannabis-infused and non-infused treats like doughnuts, crème brûlées, cereal, etc.

I think the menu is what sets me apart from others. I really haven’t seen infused cereals and definitely haven’t seen an infused Nutella crème brûlée. I wanted to show people there is a healthier way to consume cannabis. I customize each snack for the consumer so that it’ll always be enjoyable, whether it be something light or so strong that you meet your alternate self from the parallel universe lol.

I’m most proud of the collaborations that I have been a part of! I work very close with my two sisters – CJC PR does our PR and ccthabrain takes all the photos for my content. I love being able to grow our brands together!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that our city is a huge melting pot of different cultures that also offer different opportunities.

I definitely can do without all the traffic, hahaha!
