Meet Jasper Hsieh

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jasper Hsieh.

Jasper Hsieh

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in Fremont in the Bay Area and moved to Southern California during high school. While in the Bay Area I grew up with a background in B-boying and Hip Hop Jams.

Once I was 19, I decided to leave the country for a short 2-week vacation, but it turned into a year-long journey. I randomly bought a ticket to Taiwan one day and left the day after on a whim. Didn’t have a plan in place. I just decided to pack my bag and figure it out along the way.

I had to figure out where to live, learn how to speak the language and figure out how to create an income source. Taiwan ended up being the start of my nightlife career as I had a ton of fun and was so impressed by the excitement of nightlife. After a year, I decided it was time for me to come back to the US and start my life. I have always been around DJs at Bboy and hip-hop jams, but I have never thought about DJing myself. Once I came back to the states,I picked up a pair of turntables and some records and tried to teach myself. After a year, I realized how difficult it was and decided to search for a mentor.

I stumbled upon the Academy of DJs, and being part of the 1st few seasons, I decided to stick around and help develop the Academy of DJs to the place where it is today. Shout out to my brothers of the Academy of DJs, who went on this journey together to develop the best DJ school out there. What other DJ school cares more about the students than anything else? Being non-profit and having a staff dedicate their time all year is amazing. I am extremely grateful for our team, who has helped bring the Academy to the place it is today.

I started to take notice that in the DJ industry, there would be niches in the industry. I saw different DJs excel in different things, whether it be nightlife like clubs and bars or wedding and corporate events. I noticed that each typoe of Djs would have a different skill set.

I started djing full time within the 1st year of my getting into djing, djing bars, night clubs, weddings, corporate events, you name it. I took every event that came my way just because I wanted to grow and have the experience under my belt. DJing my first club at Exchange La, and many clubs and bars after, opening for artists like A track, DJ Mustard, Miles Medina, YG, and many more. All while DJing 30+ weddings a year and bars and clubs every weekend. I gained a ton of experience in those first few years.

After a few years, in my early 20s, I got into management for some nightclubs because I wanted to learn the business side of the nightlife and entertainment industry. It was a crazy time, but I am grateful for the experience. I learned so much about the business side and how it works, knowing that in the future, I would like to have a business of my own.

I noticed that in the DJ industry, you would have nightlife DJs and wedding/corporate DJs. But there were always pros and cons to each side.

Nightlife DJs
Pros
– Can mix well.
– Can MC and read a crowd.
– Knows the music and current hits that get people going.

Cons
– Party animals and can be disorganized.

Wedding DJs
Pros
– Organized.
– Understands business.

Cons
– Usually, a bad DJ.
– Can’t mix well or read a crowd.
– Usually, a super corny DJ that venues have in-house.

I wanted to smash the two worlds of nightlife and wedding/corporate together to create a dope DJ & media company that can bring the best of both worlds into light.

Fast forward a few years of DJing and nightlife at MGMT, and I decided it was time to take everything I learned and start my own business. I created a DJ & media company called Bilo Events, which primarily caters to weddings and corporate events with services like DJs/MCs, photography, videography, special FX, Lighting, photo booths, and more. Although it caters to weddings and corporate events, I wanted to bring the nightlife style & flavor into these types of events.

Our team grew from 1 person to 15 person over the course of a single year! We plan to grow even more and have our own venues in the near future! We take the dopest nightlife DJs and incorporate and teach them to operate in the wedding/corporate industry. My aim was to get rid of all the corny corporate DJs and bring some real excitement and life to that industry.

A big thing for us is that we always wanted people to feel included and have a good time at our events. No matter how big or small an event that we threw, it was always known as the best vibes. Having close friends drunkenly sing along to hits and more underground songs was always a pleasure to us.

Outside of the wedding/corporate circuit, I still had my love of nightlife and DJing clubs. A few friends and I started an R&B and hip-hop party Called Luv Language. We wanted to bring the best sing-a-longs and vibes to the SoCal party scene.

A big thing for us is that we always wanted people to feel included and have a good time at our events. No matter how big or small an event that we threw, it was always known as the best vibes. Having close friends drunkenly sing along to hits and more underground songs was always. Pleasure to us. We hope to bring more light to the events and bring it to a more national scale one day. One step at a time!

I never knew that DJing would take over my life and bring me the success and friendships that I have today. I am extremely grateful and can’t wait to see all my friends succeed alongside with me!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. People who know me know that, for some odd reason, I have the worst luck, LOL. Struggled with not having a car for the first four years of my DJ career, taking trains to events, and looking for rides.

Throughout this challenge of trying to figure out how to survive and thrive financially. I ended up being the guinea pig for so many things, but I am grateful for these experiences as it allows me to help others on how to navigate the challenges and constant uphill battles in business and personal relationships.

Home life wasn’t too great with an extremely toxic family member who created an environment where doors needed to be locked constantly out of fear of something happening. Going through this experience created an environment where I felt like I didn’t want to go home. Home is supposed to be a peaceful sanctuary, but it felt more like the one place I always wanted to avoid.

I always appreciate the struggle, though, as it made me who I am today. Because of the struggles, I prioritize relationships and helping others grow and fight their own limiting beliefs to show others that there is more to life.

As you know, we’re big fans of Bilo Events and the Luv Language Party. For our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand, what can you tell them about it?

We create and capture memories through modern DJ & Media Services. “A company that cares.”

We specialize in high-end DJ/MCs, photography, videography, photo booths, lighting, special FX, and more. I have been a part of other DJ companies, etc., and have never seen other DJs or media companies do it the way we do it. We have a very special formula that prioritizes experience and communication.

Something that I have noticed is often overlooked in this industry, and I’ve seen most people just do the bare minimum. No matter how big or small the event, you get 110%. I am extremely proud of our company culture. We truly have a team that treats each other like family, even outside the company. Our support for each other is unmatched.
