Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Press.
Jason, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Coming from the mad world of New York advertising, I have evolved from being an ad man who knows all the answers, to recognizing that most leaders are fully capable of making the right decisions — particularly when they have a supportive, collaborative and creative-minded coach working with them to get past their blind spots and see new possibilities.
Prior to beginning my executive coaching practice, I was known for managing fast-growing and profitable creative service companies, delivering year-over-year top line and bottom line growth. Within WPP’s Grey Advertising, I built a New York-based branding and design company from the ground up, and managed a sales promotion network across multiple offices. At MDC, I ran the West Coast office of a global social media agency.
In short, I know how to consistently bring out the best in people and teams, inspire original and bold ideas, deliver high-ROI value to clients, and cultivate meaningful partnerships.
I live in Southern California and travel extensively with my branding consultancy and executive coaching work.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a road with a lot of twists and turns.
For over 20 years, I never thought I wanted to go back to school. I was constantly learning and growing on the job. One of my favorite aspects of my role as an agency leader was building and mentoring a team. More than a couple of people had suggested that I should explore the world of executive coaching, but truthfully, I had no idea what coaching was. That’s when I decided that I wanted to add to my tool box and go back to school. I enrolled in the Hudson Institute of Coaching in Santa Barbara and it really opened up a whole new world for me.
I’ve always enjoyed working with clients to craft and deliver their brand stories — with distinction, clarity, and confidence. Now I largely work with teams and individuals to help them find their unique voices and reshape their narratives.
The things I learned at Hudson not only prepared me to be an executive coach, they made me better as a brand and marketing consultant. Suddenly I found myself listening to my clients on a whole new level — really helping them discover the answers inside of themselves and allowing us to be better a co-creating solutions.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jason Press Executive Coaching – what should we know?
I specialize in “nurturing curiosity” — tapping into my clients’ natural desire to explore, grow and create — both individually and within their organizations.
My business is a hybrid; Branding Consultancy + Executive Coach
As a branding consultant, I am skilled at solving multi-channel marketing challenges, identifying and driving forward new business opportunities, navigating competitive environments, and creating inspired brand development and marketing strategies.
As an executive coach, I partner with entrepreneurial and corporate clients, to help them be more authentic and effective in their jobs and in their lives. My coaching model centers on short-term engagements, focused on specific, actionable improvements that drive personal and company performance, with a strong track record of working with clients who operate at the intersection of art and commerce.
It’s a unique combination that really helps facilitate creativity, co-creation and reinvention.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
For years we’ve all been taught to leave our emotions at the door when we come to work. I know that used to think that way!
When I moved to California from New York in 2010, I took a giant step back and re-evaluated the way I wanted to create better integration between the way I lived and the way I worked. This meant letting myself be more open and vulnerable in order to be more authentic.
My motto is simple: Live. Love. Learn.
For me, living means staying in the moment. Really listening to those around me. To live the experience in real time, without being distracted by regrets of the past or concerns of the future.
Loving means wanting to share my life with family, friends, and my dogs. I’m fortunate that I’ve finally found the perfect partner and I measure my “success” by how we able to move through life together.
Learning is a crucial part of growing for me. I read a lot and try to soak up as much knowledge as I can through travel, the arts, going inside of myself, and mostly, great conversations with others.
