Meet Jason May of Lo Carb U Foods and Great Low Carb Bread Company in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason May.

Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Lo Carb U Foods in Dec of 2003 because I was on a low carb diet and knew there was a lot of products on the market but had to go around to a lot of difference places to locate things. I wanted to provide all things low carb in one place for low carbers, diabetics etc. In 2005 we started the transition to online and each year it took over more and more of our business. Fast forward to 2017 and we do nearly 95% of our business online and have grown 1000% since opening. We have our own brand the Great Low Carb Bread Company which has 76 different products including Low Carb Bread, Bagels, Sub Rolls, and Pasta etc. Distributed in the US, Canada and the UK with Asia coming soon.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been relatively smooth except for 2009-2011 when the great recession took hold. They were trying times for us as people weren’t spending their money on healthier foods, they were trying to pay their bills and were worried about a lot of other things.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lo Carb U Foods / Great Low Carb Bread Company story. Tell us more about the business.
We focus only on Low carb and sugar free foods. That’s all we do so our customers can rest assured that if it’s got a bunch of sugar and carbs in it then we don’t carry it. I’m proud of the fact that we’ve flourished for 13 years while a lot of others in the same niche have fallen by the wayside. Our customer service and wide selection of products and competitive pricing sets us aside from others.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel I’ve had very good luck with the business but can only attribute that to a very small contribution as hard work and diligence and keeping relevant is really what makes or breaks a company.
