Meet Jason Biyo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Biyo.

Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was a little kid, I used loved watching music videos on MTV with my older sister. My dad always used to play a lot of Congolese music and music videos around the house so I would always watch people performing in front of massive crowds and playing instruments and I instantly knew that’s what I wanted to do I wanted to sing and dance and put on shows. So at nine years old, I was like I am going to dedicated my WHOLE LIFE to becoming and being an entertainer. So I joined choirs all throughout my school years. I acted in plays and in middle school and high school as well as talent shows because I truly just loved to be on a stage and I loved getting my voice heard. I also wrote music and learned guitar and piano. Then I decided to go to a performing arts college in LA so I could hone my skills and I majored in Musical Theater so I could be a better dancer, actor and singer. Had I not moved to LA, I don’t think I would have really known much about the industry or what it takes to become a great artist. While I was in high school and college, I gained a bigger appreciation for the creative side of being an artist so I started learning to make beats when I was 18 and on June 5th, 2020 I dropped my first EP with songs all produced by me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing up the road was definitely NOT a smooth one. A lot of people never took me seriously as a singer including my family so it always felt like it was me against the world. I wasn’t able to have the money to go to some big fancy studio that my parents funded and if I was in the studio, I had to cough it up myself. I had to sit down and learn to play the music I heard in my head by myself all alone and make do with the cards I was dealt with. In high school, people used to ridicule my music but yet they respected me because I was always pushing to be better. People wanted me to quit, people compared to me to singers in the industry and said I sound just like so and so or that I’ll never sound as good as so and so. A lot of the time, people were so quick to tell me what I couldn’t do and never highlighted what I was actually doing right and it made me feel like I would never be enough. But, I did make some amazing friends who truly believe in me and teachers in college helped show me the potential that I didn’t even know existed inside of me so I decided to just keep striving to be the best version of myself not just for me but for others to let them know they can grind and grow.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a Singer, Songwriter, Actor, Dancer and Music Producer. I have a couple of music singles on various streaming services and I just recently dropped an EP on June 5th called Never Underestimate Mr. Biyo (N.U.M.B). I’ve also produced for Emmillienne and Her and I are a Music Group that goes by the name of GENIHSIS and we will be dropping joint music soon. I am proud to have produced, recorded and written an album myself and I hope to do more stuff behind the scenes in the future for other artists too. My music style is mainly R&B to the core but I also rap, I am Congolese so I love Afrobeats and Caribbean vibes and I am also influenced by Aaliyah, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Usher, Ne-yo, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Rihanna and sooooo much more the list really goes on and on. I think what sets me apart from others is that I really care about the vocal production elements in my music I love harmonies and I feel like not a lot of artists do that nowadays. Also, there aren’t a lot of triple threat male singers representing the next generation of music and I feel like I have a lot to offer and a lot that I want to accomplish in the future.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think the definition of success for me anyway is that you’re better than you were yesterday. Of course, people can recognize you for your awards and all that you have done but I think you’re truly successful when you are constantly outdoing yourself and when people see the growth in you. Success is honestly an iceberg and an illusion and I know I am successful when I see a positive change in myself or that I am positively impacting others to change.
