Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Rafael.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was 19, I moved out here to Los Angeles to become a professional dancer. I was eager, excited- expectant. I worked hard, and has fun, and things flowed into my experience. I got to dance with major artists, my favorite choreographers, be in movies, commercials, and teach at the most famous dance studio in the world. God really backed me up. Now, as I continue expanding as an artist in theater, writing, acting, and whatever desires reveal themselves to me, I use less brute effort, and more alignment to achieve my goals. It is a journey of joy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe it can be easy. I think it is our mind, our attention to limitations, that makes it hard. Of course this misconception has caused me to lose balance, like everyone else. I find that it has been more useful to look back and see what beautiful things have manifested in my life, and observe the state I was in when they happened: always a state of trust, ease, love.
Jasmine Rafael Creative – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
When it comes to who I am, and what I create as Jasmine Rafael the creating artist, it’s a simple philosophy: I create what I feel, and I feel what I create. This is as consistent as possible. It seems general but it’s the most specific thing in the world to me, it guides me in terms of what to say yes to and what to say no to. My own works are always very personal to me, and vulnerability is something that I value, I believe that frees audiences to do the same, and it frees me every time I do something. For me, its all about my never ending journey to more liberation. I also am committed to bettering my execution of each dance, poem, song, video with a dedication to the skills of each tool that I use, so I study and practice as much as I can.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to continue in my work as a creator, basking in appreciation and wonderment always. I do have big plans for my future 😉 quite massive, and I keep them between me and God to stay focused. Three tangible works that I am involved in that are coming up are Netflix’s “The Prom”, which I danced in, East West Players’ presents Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins”, which I choreographed with my partner Preston Mui, and 5-Star Theatricals “Mamma Mia”, which I am in, these last two productions are of course flexible in their returns to the stage due to COVID-19.
