Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine McGill.
Hi Jasmine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always took interest in what I wore. I would always try to pick out my outfits when my mom would be putting together what I was wearing for the day. When I got to high school, my grandmother introduced me to thrifting. This is when I started to realize that my style was a form of expression, this is when I started to get creative and became somewhat of a trendsetter at my school! When I realized that I had a passion for fashion, I joined the modeling team at my school as a model. This introduced me to the thought of wanting to be a fashion model. So with the help of my mother, I pursued it! I started
Going to local model calls, getting picked to be in the top local fashion shows that eventually turned into me being a traveling model, traveling to other states to be in runway shows! This also led to me getting my first job as a runway coach for a mother agency at the age of 16! I was modeling and coaching other aspiring models for about three years until it was time for me to go off to college! Due to my college location and lack of modeling opportunities in the area, I put a halt to modeling and focused on my academics majoring in fashion merchandising with a minor in business administration and I also became a college dancer. While I was a creative in college, showing off my unique style, students on campus started asking me to style them. Even though personal styling was a huge part of my life subconsciously, I never thought about being a stylist at the time because modeling was always my main focus! I always told myself, once I graduated I would dive right back into modeling and that is exactly what I did! In 2017 I graduated and immediately pursued my modeling career. Then I said to myself “hey I want to be a stylist too!” So I started curating my own fashion photoshoots. I model, style and creative direct them! My social media following loves it and that’s how people started reaching out to me to inquire about any of the three creative fields! They go hand and hand with each other so it works out perfectly! I have become a Jack of all trades in the fashion industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of my first challenges when I first started being a creative was knowing my worth enough to set my prices where I felt matched my work ethic. Another challenge was people telling me I can’t or shouldn’t pursue all three creative roles. This mostly came up during my transition from only modeling to doing all three creative roles. Lastly, comparing myself to others. Now that social media is an imperative platform for any creative in any field, sometimes it’s hard to not compare yourself and feel like you’re not doing enough. I always try to moderate the amount of casual social media use I indulge in because it can be a strain on your mental.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a model, creative director and stylist. I am known for my print modeling and I am most proud of my passion projects! Passion projects are the photoshoots that I curate myself from start to finish with the help of my boyfriend who captures the photos. He’s a photographer! I am truly proud of my passion projects because it symbolizes who I am and expresses what I feel. It’s my art! The one thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I do not just model, I do not just creative direct and I do not just style. I do all three! I’m a versatile babe (as my Instagram bio says!) that puts my heart in what I love to do which causes for great execution every time!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
First things first, I do not believe in luck. I believe in being blessed. The role of being blessed has played an astounding role in my life because no matter the hardships I face in this industry, there is no such thing as taking an L (loss) because everything I encounter is a learning experience which is a blessing in itself. Sometimes I may get that feeling of wanting to give up. But my love for the craft is too strong to even ponder on that thought for too long.
