Meet Jasmine-Joy Norton of Crazy Sweets by Jay in Riverside/Moreno Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine-Joy Norton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine-Joy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a young girl, I was always in the kitchen; with my grandma or my mom. We would make cakes, cookies, and these amazing mini strawberry tarts. Growing up in a large family one thing that we always had together were family dinners; everyday at 6pm we would gather as a family and talk about our day and just be together. After every dinner there was desserts, desserts were always my highlight of the day, whether it would be freshly baked cakes and cookies or the store-bought desserts. I began to be in charge of the desserts after every family dinner and that is where I found my niche for baking.

As I grew older, I went to college and during that time in college, my mind was always on baking. During my college years, I heard of this bakery that only sold cupcakes, which is the world-famous bakery, Sprinkles Cupcakes. I decided that I wanted to go to culinary school and pursue my dream as a baker, and that is exactly what I did. I graduated from Bacone College in Oklahoma and moved back to California and started my journey to become a baker.

I attended the Art Institute in San Bernardino, California and graduated with my business degree in baking. Of course fresh out of culinary school you wouldn’t be a pro, so I continued to practice and I made my first sell in November 2013; that is when I knew I can do this, I can truly become a bakery. Through the years, I’ve made so many cakes, cookies, cupcakes and I have been thankful for every order, every inquiry and every person that has been involved and supported my baking business.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business from the ground up has had its hiccups here and there. The only struggle I have currently is having a full-time job outside of my bakery business. It is hard when you have to balance your job, your bakery and even your personal life. I am still learning to balance all three. You just need to remind yourself that it will only get better and take a step back and see how far you’ve grown as a person and as a small business owner. In the near future, I am eventually going to give up my 9-5 and open up a small adorable bakery, that is my dream.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Crazy Sweets by Jay – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Crazy Sweets by Jay is knowns for anything sweet. We specialize in novelty cakes, cupcakes, donuts, and cookies. I believe my biggest seller would have to be my drip cakes and 6oz cookies. I am most proud of my cookies, these bad boys have taken my business to the next level! Cakes are definitely a favorite of mine but cookies will always be my number one.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I was born and raised in Moreno Valley, I watched this city being built. I love how it’s a big city but still has a small-town feel to it. One thing I do wish Moreno Valley had was a bakery supply store, that way I can support that business instead of going to Riverside or Redlands.
