Meet Jasmine Dixon of Greater Good LA in South LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Dixon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a Richmond, VA native who moved to California for a change of scenery and a fresh start. After serving as an Americorps Member for my first 11-months in Los Angeles, I was accepted into the University of Southern California’s Master of Social Work program. Ironically, I began learning some of life’s most valuable lessons simultaneously; in the classroom AND in my personal life. I felt like the universe had ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ on replay. I’d found myself JAMMIN’ during the good times but stumbling over tough lessons. Nonetheless, those eves and flows helped me realize what I wanted out of life.

Nonetheless, the eves and flows of California living helped me understand how humanity is all interconnected, So after graduating from USC in May of 2019, I put my knowledge and passion to work to launch Greater Good LA; a consulting business supporting non-profits with grant writing, program development, and strategy. Although I’ve only been in business for less than a year, I’ve already had the opportunity to work with unique organizations that are changing lives across the globe. I couldn’t be more grateful for where this leap of faith has landed me and what it has in store for my future!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This journey has kept me humble. One of my biggest struggles is balancing ambition and drive. In a city with many distractions, it’s been  difficult to focus on my goals and pursue them relentlessly. I’ve learned that discipline and resilience is the key to growth. So as I continue to learn about myself, my purpose, and my career, I’ve become more intentional about  showing myself grace throughout the process.

Please tell us about Greater Good LA.
Greater Good LA LLC is a consulting business dedicated to helping non-profits thrive! We offer grant writing support, program development, and business strategy.

Non-Profit Organizations are the collective voice of the community, so we want them to be heard loud and clear.

My business motto: “Impact over profit” is what sets me apart from other for-profit businesses. I believe genuine relationships can create more change than any amount of money ever could. So I focus on helping my clients maximize their impact in the community, rather than how much money I can make from a client. Yes, I used my knowledge to create a side-hustle, but I also did it to keep my Social Work Skills sharp and my passion intact. I’d do it (and have done it) for free!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Greater Good LA, LLC is still very new so I haven’t made it too far from the starting line. But if I had to anything differently, I would have started using a detailed needs assessment much sooner.

A needs assessment helps consultants understand their client’s needs, expectations, and goals before the consultation. When I first started, I was asking my client’s questions off the cuff, based on what I knew about their business. It was very informal, which led to clouded roles and goals within the partnership. Having a well-prepared/ detailed needs assessments definitely would’ve saved me time and energy in the beginning.
