Today we’d like to introduce you to JaQuan Slaughter.
Hi JaQuan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I first turn 18, I came to Los Angeles and lived on Skid Row for two years. I stayed in the shelter and was in a temporary program and then a long-term program to gain a housing section 8 voucher. Within those two years, I met a lot of people downtown and became a stronger person and realized that California has a lot to offer, a lot of programs, a lot of organizations as well as a lot of people just willing to help; you just have to get out and do the research. I’ve never seen such a large homeless population in my entire life so I was kind of fascinated at how people survive down there and I too took on some of those survival skills. Through my journey, I went to Job corps Downtown Los Angeles while being in a long-term program. While going to Job corps, I received a voucher to move into my own one-bedroom apartment. I then moved and was an off-campus student going to Job corps. I’ve met amazing people like Candice Boyd, Ne-Yo, Meagan Good, Michael Blackson just to name a few. I was able to have friends giving at Neyo and EZ wife crystal house and actually was pretty cool. While in Job corps I figured I wanted to be a chef so I attended Maxine Waters company program. I didn’t really care for the teacher so I dropped out and just started cooking from home selling dinner plates and moving forward I end up going viral on social media having a breakthrough receiving 200,000 followers on TikTok. With over 15 million views all of my videos, I had 90.5 k followers on Instagram before my page was hacked and taken down! My food is mainly soul food but I always love a infuse Asian twist for Mediterranean. It’s been a year since I went viral and during that time I was able to cook for the Oscars with Wolfgang Puck. I actually have a picture with me and one of the Oscar winners Kota. I currently work for fox lots and universal studios. I am a line cook currently. A few of my clients that I go to pretty often would be London on the track trippie Redd 808 Mafia. I used to cook for Tamar Braxton and her son beans as well as Vincent when he would come over from time to time. And all my time here in Los Angeles has been amazing; they’re great opportunities if you get up and get out and find them. I also started off with pastries. I love desserts; I love little small hors d’oeuvres when I cooked for the Oscars that whole week I was able to work with dessert as well as savory.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road honestly. I would do birthday parties catering for people. I’ve been robbed I’ve been scammed out of money from clients but it was my mistake for trusting and not receiving a payment up front and or sometimes a deposit but I’ve grown and I’ve learned from certain situations that you can’t trust everyone and go off of there where it’s a business in business comes first regardless of the person. I never really have too many other problems in Los Angeles besides knowing what colors to wear and what areas; it’s a very touchy situation when you’re not known in that area; it can be dangerous sometimes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a private celebrity chef and I go to any location home venue Airbnb hotel motel and I’ll provide a full five-course meal or just a snack whatever is required. I specialize in Cajun cuisine my most popular dish would have to be my seafood boil and my fried lobster tail with my Cajun butter dipping sauce I went viral for colossal crab legs as well as dipping fried lobster in a Cajun garlic butter sauce and taking a bite I’m most proud of is just how different my food is from other people in Los Angeles my flavors I have a southern background from Louisiana and that really shows in all of my dishes no matter what I cook I have a soul full touch to my dish almost proud of me and my growth on how far came I would have never thought I would be able to cook for a celebrity or so many celebrities follow me or see my food.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
