Today we’d like to introduce you to James Loges.
James, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from Anaheim, spent my high school years in the Inland Empire, then came back to Orange County to study film at Fullerton College before transferring to CalState Fullerton on 2015.
My father is an American (Irish/German) from outside Chicago, but my mother immigrated to CA from Zacatecas, Mexico when she was 17. I started pre-school not knowing how to speak English and I still consider my Chicano roots to be a huge part of my life. I visit Zacatecas as often as possible and currently do my best to supply my services to Latino artists and businesses.
In terms of artistic influences, it seems every filmmaker I studied with was inspired by Tarantino and I’m certainly no different. However, I feel myself more and more inspired by Scorsese and his ability to apply beautiful, classical filmmaking to the gritty environments he deals with. Im also fascinated by Akira Kurosawa and his ability to tell a universal story with visual language
Has it been a smooth road?
About halfway through college, I started helping one of my best friends start a window washing company. It began to grow enough to the point I felt comfortable leaving my day job but I had gotten ahead of myself. We made a couple bad deals and I ended up back at a grocery store trying to recoup. I sometimes feel bad about all that wasted time and energy, but I also know that what I learned during that time is directly applicable to the business run today. As a matter of fact, I would likely be working at a studio instead of running my own production company if I didn’t already feel like my biggest entrepreneurial failure is behind me.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Only A Story Media – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I approach local artists and businesses that I feel could benefit from an improvement to their promotional and marketing media. My specialty lately has been creating minute -long videos for Instagram that either recap a recent event or promote a project like a music video. I have produced a half-hour documentary for a local internet radio personality (The Rodriguez Show, “Nobody Gets Paid For This”) and am currently producing a full-length documentary about the NOBRAKES concert series.
One of my recent clients was asked about our collaboration during a recent interview and he said he approached me because “I’m doing things differently”. I took that as a huge compliment because rather than simply being a videographer, I’m trying to be a legitimate artist that understands how to highlight the creativity in others
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My business thrives on potential, so my favorite thing is our ability to set out exploring on any given day and find either a potential location for a great looking shoot or an awesome start-up business or artist I want to collaborate with. Our city is so big that finding opportunities is a great numbers game.
